Sister Cinema Swap
Sisters Kate and Emily have seen a lot of movies, but not as many as they would like. With their differing tastes in genres, they will work through their backlogs of movies they haven't seen yet. Both sisters talk about why they did or didn’t see the movie, the plot, and rate them out of ten at the end.

This week on Sister Cinema Swap, Emily finally watches Kiki's Delivery Service. Kate and Emily discuss American Girl dolls, Futurama, bad animal vibes, a spicy broom, boys being very forward, decoy Jiji, a weird bike, witch's block, and vehicles being the true antagonist of the movie. Additionally Emily laments not hearing Jeff the dog's voice, and Kate drops lots of Jiji lore.

I'm Emily Bolman and I'm finally watching Keeping the Lopen Story. So cool.
SPEAKER_02So Emily, why I don't know if I was really surprised that you hadn't seen this movie, but why how did you miss this one?
SPEAKER_01So I really don't have an answer as to like why I deliberately missed it. Because my my all I can do is go through my experience with Studio Ghibli stuff, which is basically I had a boyfriend who showed me Princess Mononoke and then took me to see How's Moving Castle when it came out.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Kate knows his boyfriend very well. Uh-huh. And then I literally didn't know about any other ones for a long time. So basically for years and years, like no one told me about it or told me to watch it. So I just went along my merry way and didn't.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then even I thought, you know, while we were in Japan, I thought, oh well, like why did how did I miss it then? And I think back about it. And the only thing I ever felt like I saw was Totoro. Like I have a picture of myself like next to a giant wooden like Totoro cutout.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01And like, but there was nothing for Kiki's delivery service. So I I had no idea that it was popular, that people liked it, or really anything about it. So it's kind of just like not pleading the fifth, but like snuck under the radar, kind of. Kind of. And then, oh, and then I think it was maybe a couple years ago, Chase wanted to watch one, and he was like, Oh, he's watched more. And he said, Oh, spirited away. And I was like, Okay, sure. I hated that movie.
SPEAKER_02It's it's real upsetting. And like you kind of you get like the aesthetic of that one. Like you like, it's easy to think of like the sort of like snapshots of that because that's where like the soot sprites are from. That's where the no-face is from. That's where Haku, the really pretty dragon, is from. So like the aesthetics of that movie are so good, but it is the story is it's a very, it's a really upsetting like concept.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_01And you can't tell by the way that people love it. And I've seen that like you know, movie cover for so long, and I thought, oh, speared away Studio Ghibli. My other two experiences were pretty cool with that. Let's go into this one. And I was like, oh my god, the parents that like, and this was also closer to postpartum for me too. So it was a lot harder for me to watch a kid, you know, lose their parents and everything. Yeah. So after that, I was like, I don't know if I trust your opinions on this stuff.
SPEAKER_02So I just kind of didn't. No, that's fair. Yeah. I think it it's very funny that we're watching this one, and like this is just fully coincidental timing, but um, this past weekend was the uh anime convention, uh, the local anime convention that I have been going to since high school. Um, and that I, you know, have had friends who, you know, were have been going to that since they were in like middle school and stuff. So it's just like the amount of anime that has always been a part of my life is wild. Yeah. And I was um, I was explaining to uh to my husband's kid um about in the early 2000s, the way you got anime was you got a VHS from someone, or you got like a what was it, like a like a DVD that was like non-region specific, but it was like Yes, yeah, like it was such a specific thing, but like you had like and and like going to um like going through artist alley or not artist alley, but like the dealer room. Conventions, the shops, yeah. Going to the dealer room at an anime con. That's how you got stuff. That was how you got the like the DVDs and the manga and everything. And like truly, I was just full like back in my day, but I was like, no, I have all six episodes of Foolie Cooley on three DVDs, and she looked at me and was like, what do you mean?
SPEAKER_03What's wrong with you guys? I was like, listen, it was a different time. But I think it was the 80s, man.
SPEAKER_02It was it was the 80s. Um, but yeah, like I think especially like the earlier anime movies, like I think those three, like Spirited Away, House Moving Castle, and Princess Manonoke came out when we were in I think middle school and high school, but it's like the English dubs of them.
SPEAKER_01Oh, let me double check because I know House, yeah, I was definitely in high school for House because it came to the Carolina Theater.
SPEAKER_02Yes, oh gosh, Princess Mononoke.
SPEAKER_01I watched at home, so I don't know when that one came out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I remembered so Princess Mononoke, okay. So Princess Mononoke was 1997. So it had been out for a little bit. Spirited away was 2001, so when we were in like middle school, like starting high school. Um, Hal's Moving Castle was 20 uh was 2004. So that makes sense. Like those are like the the ages when we were like had friends who watched anime, they were newish movies. Um, but yeah, I think those were like the big ones that everybody, like like most of my friends had seen. And when it was sort of becoming mainstream and coming to theater. Yes, yes. Um, and I think with this one, I I had seen I had seen the like the pictures for Totoro for ages. Like everyone knows like the like the little the picture, like the guy. It's like it's the guy. Um, it's the little guy. Um, but that I think that movie was 1988. Um whoa. And then Kiki's Delivery Service is 1989. So they're like very close in time, but I know that they specifically do do. So I know um Kiki's Delivery Service didn't get an English dub until 1996 or 1997. So that's the thing. Like I so up to that point, like, you know, it was people watching things that are subtitled or things that are like, I hope you know Japanese, here you go, or it's like, here's a fan-dubbed version or fan like fan subtitled version. Um yeah, so like I think when we were like, I don't think for our age group they were really as popular, but I feel like I know more people who like watch Totoro when they were younger because it is like it's very very chill. Like the Totoro and Kiki's delivery service are rated G. The next three were not, like those are PG. Um, and so in the the they feel very different. Um, but Kiki's Delivery Service, like that one is I saw people dressed as Kiki this weekend. Oh yeah, it's really cute, and truly, it's just like black dress, the red shoes, and the big red bow, and it's like it's an easy cosplay, it's very cute. Um it's real comfy too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But um, I think the only reason that I watched it is that Mark and I sat down for maybe early pandemic, and we just watched a bunch of the other Studio Ghibli movies, and that was when we saw Totoro, that was when we saw Panyo, um, which I'd never seen before. Um, I still haven't watched like all the sad ones. I haven't watched uh Great of the Fireflies. I feel like it'll just bum me out. I don't know. I don't need the one that everyone's like, it's real sad. I'm like, I'm good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm like, I've seen a lot of sad movies. I'm fine. Thanks.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know. Um, but yeah, I it it was one that like I was kind of vaguely aware of and I didn't really know much about it, but so yeah, like I mentioned, it uh came out in 1989. It was written, directed, and produced by Hayomiyazaki. Um initially he was just gonna be the producer, um, but he wasn't happy with the script, and so he took over the script, and then he also ended up taking over directing. Um the original director stayed on as an assistant director. Um normal for him, yes. He's I if you've ever seen like the little clips of of like the documentaries of like interviewing him, like he has these like you know, beautiful, like lovely, magical worlds, and he is just the most serious, jaded, frustrated dude in on the planet. It's so funny.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_02Yes, he's it's most of the pictures are him just like chain smoking. It's like he is just like has no patience for anyone, is so done. And I'm like, all right, man, like you're that's very Japanese. I mean, yeah, exactly. Yeah, it's truly. I'm like, you you make amazing stuff, good for you. And he's like, I fucking hate this. Like he's so mad about the Titans. Um, it's very entertaining. But yeah, uh, it was based on a book of the same name uh by Aiko Kadono. Um, I was curious about how many uh studio Ghibbling movies are based on books. It's about half of them. Because I knew how I knew How's Moving Castle was based on a book. I knew that I knew several other I think Grave of the Fireflies is is based on uh um a book as well. Um but yeah, it's about half of them are based on books, which I think is interesting. Depending on where you watch this, I'm assuming that you watched and you watched an English dub of it. I don't know. I I think at first I was like, I almost texted you and I was like, are you gonna watch it? And I was like, Yeah, I'm gonna watch the dub, it's fine. Like it's it's okay.
SPEAKER_01Um if I was watching it casually, I might be more inclined to at least check out the sub. Yeah. If I like the voices, because Chase and I just did that the other day with an anime that we started. We're like, okay, let's listen to this, and they were like, let's try the English, and I was like, Yeah, I have to do the English. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I don't think I've watched many, I haven't watched many Miyazaki movies in Japanese. I do watch House um uh Princess Mononoke in Japanese sometimes.
SPEAKER_01Do you?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I do the biggest thing, just my side note, like I love I love Princess Mononoka, like it's so, so good. Um, but one of my favorite things about the voice acting with that, um, the the voice of the great wolf Moro. Um, in English, it's Gillian Anderson, who is phenomenal and great, and I love her. But a the Japanese uh voice actor uh for Moro is a uh drag queen. And so watch it, like I've seen like little like clips and of like like behind the scenes stuff of like her like coming in in full drag and like like recording the lines and just doing like this. It's just such a cool, like different like ethereal quality to the voice. Like it's just it's so not Jillian Anderson, but it's just it's got it's got something really interesting to it. Like I really enjoy like specifically that addition to it. I'm like, this is so good.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Last time I watched it, I'd have to rewatch it, honestly.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's oh it's good. Um yeah, but yeah, um so in this case, like we we both did watch the English dub of it. Um the English dub cast uh consists of uh Kirsten Dunce, um Phil Hartman in his, I think one of his last film roles, um, Matthew Lawrence of early early of the early 1990s. Um Tress McNeil, who uh I always hear her um she did so many voices in Futurama and like that like she's one of those voice actresses who has been in everything, and so you're like, what are you? And it's like oh okay, you're this person. Like she's I think she's like every like background female character in Futurama. Um gosh, yeah, yeah, she's she's one of those.
SPEAKER_01I specifically didn't look these people up before, but um, there weren't too many that were notable.
SPEAKER_02Um, and also uh Janine Garofalo is in this as well.
SPEAKER_01Um I knew that name and I was like, who are you? Yeah, of course it has the why are you giving me the Japanese voices? That makes sense.
SPEAKER_02Oh, on um IMDB? Yeah, for some reason it only shows the Japanese ones, and I'm like, ugh.
SPEAKER_01Well, frick.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um am I looking up?
SPEAKER_02Tress McNeil. Hang on.
SPEAKER_01Yes, T-R-E-S-S.
SPEAKER_02Yes, um, M-A-C.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I see you. Yeah, and a maniacs.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh. Yeah, that's what I'm telling you. She's been in everything. I think she's dot worn.
SPEAKER_01Mickey Mouse Clubhouse?
SPEAKER_02She's Daisy. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Okay, this is my life right now. Robo Gobo, Minnie's Bow Tunes. There you go. Yeah, and then she goes into uh puppy dog pals. Yep, okay. All right. This is this is yep.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she's she is what oh my gosh. Mickey Mouse Funhouse. So she's Daisy.
SPEAKER_01She is the Daisy Duck voice.
SPEAKER_02Get it. She's Daisy Duck in Disney Dreamlight Valley, the video game. Ah, there you go. Relevance. Can I say she looks incredible for Stephanie Ford? Jesus Christ. Good for her. Love this.
SPEAKER_01She's amphibia. Did you know that? Yes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah. I uh I'm familiar.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, but yeah, I think I do think it's interesting that it like that she was the voice for one of these big characters. Because I know, like, in which character was she?
SPEAKER_01I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_02She was um Osono.
SPEAKER_01Osono, yes, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, and then Janine Garofalo is um Ursula, who I don't think they ever say her name, but it's in like one subtitle. She is the uh the artist who lives in the woods.
SPEAKER_01Oh. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Uh Janine J-A-N-E-A-N-E. Um, she was in Mystery Men. You'll know her from that. She's the one.
SPEAKER_01I was like, I had a friend, Janine, and that is not how she spelled Jane. Oh no, no, most people do not.
unknownYou're fine.
SPEAKER_01Um what have you done? What have you done? I know you know her from Mystery Men.
SPEAKER_02That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Um, I know she she did a lot in the 90s, a lot of like, she was like the weird best friend in a lot of movies.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um yeah, I think it's interesting like the the cast that they often get for these like English dubs of stuff. Because like Princess Monanoke had like Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Krudep, um, Claire Danes. Um like it, yeah, it was like stacked.
SPEAKER_01I just remember the one that I don't think it's the newest anymore, but the herring one had like Robert Patton so yeah boy in the hair Willem Defoe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I haven't seen that one, but I won't either.
SPEAKER_01I was like, okay, those two alone, those lighthouse guys, like I know.
SPEAKER_03Like, let's go.
SPEAKER_01Good for them.
SPEAKER_02I know, honestly. But yeah, so the uh that is the English dub cast. Um Japanese version of the movie came out in 1989. There was an English dub that was also released in 1989 that was specifically for Japan airline international flights. Um, this one was it was released eventually. It only ever came out on Laserdisc. And so it is like not available anywhere else. Um, I did skim that, and like the English the English voice cast for that is not super notable. Um, but this specific dub came out in 1998, or this dub dubbing cast came out in 1998. Um, specifically it was a deal with Disney, isn't it? It was one of the, I think it was the first production deal, um, the collaboration with Disney to produce these and release them in the states. Um in the first week that it came out, um, I thought this was fun. It was the eighth most sold movie from Blockbuster in the first week that it came out, which those numbers used to mean something. Um, but apparently the uh the original version of that dub from 1998, um, it was criticized because it deviates a lot from the origin, like it's not a great translation of the original Japanese. Um, they had omitted some of the music, they had added like other sound effects and stuff. Basically, it just wasn't a really good, faithful adaptation. Um, so the version that you and I watched is a redubbed version that was re-released in 2010 that uses those original voice, the those that dubbed cast, um, but also sort of cuts it a little bit differently to stay truer to the original. Um, they it says they removed several ad lib lines from from like American sound effects, they added the Japanese soundtrack back in, or like the soundtrack from the original movie.
SPEAKER_01That's wild that they removed that in the first place.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it was yeah, like I I think they said that they the music shouldn't change. The music's beautiful, and they yeah, I think in the 98 version they had replaced like the opening and closing credits songs, and I was like, well, that's I know I was like, that's bullshit. Um, but yeah, one of the things that they added in in the 2010 uh was actually some like ad-libbed um uh comedic lines from Phil Hartman, too. Um yeah, which I liked. Um, but yeah, they were able to like use the um like what was recorded from that from that original film and make it a little bit more faithful to the original. Um, so yeah, that is the version that is available now, which is nice. Um that's crazy. Yeah, uh a couple things about the setting. Um apparently this is set in an alternate 1950s Europe where basically neither of the world wars happened. Yes, that explains some things, yeah. Um, it's largely based on um uh Stockholm and cities in Sweden. Um uh the uh Miyazaki and the art team took a trip there to research and like look at architecture and stuff. Um, there are also elements of Paris, Lisbon, um, Milan, and San Francisco. As you can, you know, as soon as you see the streetcars in the hills, it's like, yes, that's San Francisco. I know this one. Um, yeah, but yeah, I I thought that specifically, like, you know, dealing with air travel and truly nothing bad about air travel, like just saying, you know, this is real chill and no one's using this for bad things. It's like the wars aren't happening, let's just vibe. And I'm like, I like this, this is a good world, let's do this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the the blimp alone. I was like, well, this is in the calling it a dirigible, I was like, an interesting word. And then I was like really trying hard to find like the Japanese in it. I was like, I've lived in Japan. I was like, where is it in this movie? Yeah, and uh that makes a lot more sense that it wasn't really in there for many reasons. That will come up in my notes, I'm sure, at some point. I was like, Why is this so European? Well, there's a reason. Yeah, I was like, maybe I just haven't been to the right city because I was like, I lived in a port city, yeah. I was like, I was off the ocean. I was like, they didn't really look like that. Did you live in Milan? No, you wouldn't know anything about it. I I've never been. I've I was near the Pacific. I know the wrong ocean, the other one, the other big one.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that makes a lot more sense now.
SPEAKER_02That's my that's my trivia. Those are my fun facts. Cool. I thought I thought the the redubbing of it was so interesting. Like I'm so curious. I got lost in that. I was fascinated.
SPEAKER_01I'm so like, what if you mess up with this story? Like it was.
SPEAKER_02And like there's a lot of and like I I feel like you see that a lot of times, like like especially when anime specifically is adapted, and like what when it's adapted by different production companies. Like, I I think it like it said like G Kids was one of the production companies that re-released.
SPEAKER_01That sounds so familiar.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but it's like um, like you know, I remember hearing this. I don't think it happens as much because I feel like dubbing anime and releasing it in the States is kind of standardized a little bit more, and like I feel like it's less of a okay, well, you really want to read, you know, you want to look at like this other dub of it. It's like, oh, okay, well, this company didn't actually really do a good job. So what you want to do is find this, and then it's like, these suck, you should find a fan dub. And I'm like, okay, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Forgot about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's truly the the back in my day of of acquiring anime as an American is just it's it's wild and it's stuff that you don't even think about now. It's like we all got crunchy roll, and it's like, okay, subbed or dubbed, there you go.
SPEAKER_01Well, and even with the manga, it's like eventually, like I first I was buying a lot of it at Barnes and Noble. Yeah. Um, so it's like it was there, it was harder to get. The selection was smaller. Uh like sometimes you'd have to like order it, but like they had, you know, I didn't really have to search as hard. And you know, if you caught up on something, you wait for it to be released and then you go and get it and stuff. But like it was it was there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, so but even that I feel like took I feel like it was a big deal when we realized, oh man, you can buy manga.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, because they had those little like sampler boxes. Books like the sampler showed you. Oh my gosh, yeah, the different chapters. That's how I found the ones that I liked. Was like, I'm gonna read this little thing. Oh, I like that one, I like that one. I'm gonna buy those now.
SPEAKER_02And it was so what was it? The magazine like shown and jump where stuff is just like serialized.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's like serialized, and you're like, Yeah, here's you know, this one has been released in shown and jump for the past five years, and then you're like, Right, and now it's a book or whatever, which which is happening now with the online code, the web comics like Lore Olympus and stuff that are now becoming. And I have seen manga that were originally something I was reading online, and like a couple years later, I'm like, wait, I read the first like as a web comic. Like it's so it's crazy. Um that's wild, mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's gosh, it's so it's so fascinating.
SPEAKER_01Like, I yeah, I'm glad that that medium is still like uh our Barnes and Noble now. Oh my god, there's so much stuff. It's just like a whole wall. Yeah, and I'm like, I don't know any of this. No, Terley, that's okay.
SPEAKER_02I walked through a vendor booth of like manga, and I was like, oh, like let me like glance around and see. Oh my god, I've never heard of anything that's out now. I've never felt so uncool. I'm like, what is any of this? Right?
SPEAKER_01Evelyn and I we went to one of the used bookstores and it had like this little like narrow, because it you know it's trade-ins, like people traded in. And I saw like book four and five of Imadoki, and I was like, Oh, oh my god! But like, why would I buy the fourth and fifth one without the other ones? But I was like, I remember this, this was so good. And like I I legitimately got rid of a lot of mine.
SPEAKER_02Like I only have two in the series, and now I'm like, I maybe I should have kept those, but like, you know, honestly, looking at it, it is also the thing of if you're buying anything at a at a convention, like it used to be the only way that you could buy a lot of it, especially when you were in high school, especially when you know all you had was like what was in front of you. You weren't online shopping or anything. Um, now I feel like you can probably find a lot of it online if it's something that you really want.
SPEAKER_01Oh, find it again. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, but especially like at cons and stuff in in a dealer room, so much of it is so expensive, it's so marked up. Yeah, like I saw I saw a DVD of the full the full run of Azumanga Dayo, which I which I really thought about getting because it's not anywhere, it is not online. And I'm like, I love that anime. It was 50.
SPEAKER_01That's too much. I was like, I don't know, for a DVD, y'all. I don't know. Yeah, DVD of like how many discs was it? I I think it was three, but it's but it's also like it's 28 episodes, and I'm like, that's not many. No, no, it did not go for a long time.
SPEAKER_02It did not, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Um gosh. Oh man, okay.
SPEAKER_02I'll have like if I ever see that then I know now it it's the kind of thing where it's like you know how you you you go looking for something and you forget every book you've ever read, and you're like, I don't know what I'd even look at. Same thing with with like every anime I'd like possibly want to find. I'm like, I don't even know what I'm looking for, I gotta go.
SPEAKER_01Right, and that's why I was like, oh, let's look at the manga just to see like what they have. And I was like, there's one that I know. I was like, oh my god, it's not the first couple ones, or else I would probably be able to do that. Oh, memory unlocked, yeah. Yes, and like I know this author, and I read other stuff by them. And like the one thing that is uh Alice 19th, I got rid of those, and I was like, why did I do that? I don't know. Those were really good.
SPEAKER_02I will say the nice thing about the nice thing about mangas is that you don't have to worry about them updating the artwork like you do with other books sometimes. Like I know I years ago when they were talking about up, I I guess they did actually update the artwork for um Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. And Yes, they did. Yeah, and Mark was like, Well, I love that original artwork, and I don't have those books, and I was like, We should buy them, and he's like, Oh yeah, that makes it so we bought like a like a treasury of like all three of the books together, and I'm like, we own this now. Now we have the good ones, exactly. But it's like us talking about like American Girl books and how they updated all the artwork, and it's like we could do a whole other separate podcast about American Girl art. If listeners, if you want a mini episode about things that we feel passionately about, like American Girl Dolls and the books, please let us let us know. We're trying to figure out our lives and see what you guys want from us.
SPEAKER_01Tell us, especially if you'll pay for it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Paid content to us. It's been a while. I know. It's been a while. On that note, anyways, we should probably start talking about the movie. So I was super excited to watch it. It was nice to like go into a movie and be like, I'm not worried about this one. Like, I think it'll be fine. Yeah. I was excited for a lot of kids movie too. Yeah. A light, a light watch for both of us. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. But I sat down and I was like, still not an hour and a half. I was like, when are we going to watch an hour and a half movie? I don't know. If we had watched that, neither one of us is suggesting them. No. If we had watched Totoro, it would have been an hour and a half. Okay. I I think, I think the one that you're supposed to be doing next, I think because of where it was originally, might just be an hour and a half. I think I might have you finally.
SPEAKER_03All right. Let's see.
SPEAKER_01But that's for next time. Uh-huh. So we are along the water. We hear uh this radio playing. Uh like someone's listening to a radio. And it's all like the whole thing's gorgeous, very idyllic. Like every every scenery is beautiful. So, like, we'll just get that out of the way. Like, everything's pretty.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02You should watch this. It's gorgeous.
SPEAKER_01Yes, there's not like an ugly shot or any like in this entire movie, like all the backgrounds are beautifully painted, and like you could just you could just tell there was so much work and effort put into this entire thing. Yeah. So it's a beautiful watch in general. So this young girl who is obviously Kiki is lying in the grass listening to the radio, and this guy is talking about the weather and and just like this guy is like constantly jabbering. And and he mentions like there's a full moon tonight, and then like that like kind of triggers her. And she like gets up and runs.
SPEAKER_02Specifically, he's like, if you've been planning something big, this might be the night for it. It's like, oh, it's a special night.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And I was like, okay. Um yeah, okay. My next note is this is so idyllic, where she's like running around, you know, like the the beautiful country town.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um skipping over the creek and along like like a fence, like like the fence along a field, and yeah, it's beautiful.
SPEAKER_01To this beautiful, like flower-covered home. She like rushes in, yells for something named Gigi. We find out later that's a cat. I was like, sister, brother, person. Um, and then tells her mom, you know, it's gonna be a clear, it's gonna be clear tonight. The mom is like, I was like, alchemist, because she's like making a potion for this other woman. And then Kiki's like, you know, I'm gonna leave tonight. It's the perfect midnight. And then we get the exposition of I think the mom was saying, or I don't remember who said it, when you know, when a witch turns 13, she has to leave home for a year to start her training. And I was like, Oh, this is where we're going with this.
SPEAKER_02Okay, oh yeah, like that explains so much in one sentence. I know it's so good. Yeah, the mom explains it to the the woman she's making a potion for.
SPEAKER_01That's right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh Miss Dora, I believe. We got her name. We never got the mom's name.
SPEAKER_02We love an exposition character, and also I think I think she's just listed as Kiki's mom. And I'm like, all right, that's cool.
SPEAKER_01Yes, that makes sense. So, so so we immediately Kiki is 13. Um, they're witches, like everyone's just fine with that. Um, because this woman is here for a potion to help her rheumatism, I think. And like, and and then even at one point, uh, the older woman says, I remember when you came to town, and and da-da-da-da-da. Like, and then so it's like, okay, she she came to town to do her training and then never left. Yeah. So it's like, okay, is this you don't go back after a year, you stay potentially? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um and I think this is also it's it's funny because we also like, you know, talking about anime and stuff, it's also something that like we just like I just talked to to you and Chase about when I was visiting you, of just like the idea of like like in Japan, just you know, children being very mature and very like doing their own thing. And it's like, oh, well, you know, what's like what's to stop anyone from doing anything bad? It's like, well, it's not allowed.
SPEAKER_01You're not supposed to.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like, well, you're not supposed to, so we just don't. And like the idea of like Americans going a 13-year-old going, okay, I'm off to see the world. We're like, you what?
SPEAKER_01Right, right. And even 37 years ago when this came out, yeah, to age myself. You're welcome, you guys. Now you know. Spoilers. Whoa, she's almost 40.
SPEAKER_02You're almost 40. Shut up.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you know, I'm accepting it at this point. If you had asked me when I was like 27, I would have been like, no, I'm not near 30 at all. I think I was still calling it mid-20s at that point. Oh, you were, I remember that.
SPEAKER_03Shh. It's fine. Shh.
SPEAKER_01So, yes, for for it just to be like wildly accepted of like this is what happens. And the mom was like, Oh, I thought you were gonna wait like a month, but like doesn't even really press it. Kiki's like, nope, this is it. Yeah, but then her mom's like, You don't really know how to fly that well. And and then I think the mom even admits, like, well, I haven't even I haven't had time to teach her potions. I'm like, Okay, lady, what have you been doing? Like, like, what's happening? If you knew this was happening.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we get, I think like Kiki is just like very ready to grow up and ambition. Like, she's she's ready. She's like, I have made a decision, I want to do this. And her parents, like, well, do you wanna do you wanna think this through? Do you want to wait? But no, no, she does not.
SPEAKER_01No, tonight's the night, she wants it to be the perfect midnight that she leaves, and and yeah. So she goes upstairs uh to pack, and we see a little black cat who is Gigi, and the cat talks, surprise, didn't know that was gonna happen. And so he's like trying to get her to wait, and she doesn't want to put it off. And then her dad comes home while she's getting ready with like this hugely packed car, and she's like, I'm leaving, and he's like, We had a camping trip, and she's like, Not anymore. Too late. But also, it was funny because it like the dad seemed wildly normal. So I was very curious about the backstory of the parents of like the witch that came to town, and then the normal boy who fell in love with her, and blah blah blah. And I was like, Oh, cute. I want to find out what happened with that.
SPEAKER_02I wonder if truly, there's a book. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Maybe Oh yeah, that's a good point.
SPEAKER_02But like I also like I wonder if like I wonder if it's like a witches or only women situation. Like, I feel like I'm so used to like modern, like, like modern things where it's like, yeah, witches or whatever, like witches like like a category and not just like a gendered thing. But I feel like in this it's very specifically like we've only seen female witches, and so it's like maybe that's just what it is. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01No, yeah, for sure. Yeah, because I I think Kiki's mom talked about her grandmother, yeah, but not no no patriarchal anything mentioned. But again, like very normal. The dad's like, oh no, wait, don't like don't leave, but not like, what do you mean? Like, this is not whatever. He's just like very accepting of the the traditions and the culture and whatever. It's more just like, oh man, I didn't want you to leave. I wanted to go camping. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And she's still like when she's talking to her dad, like she's still like a little kid, too. Like she asks him to pick her up and everything. Like it's very yes, it's very sweet.
SPEAKER_01Let's see, because then he's I liked the way that they transitioned scenes a lot of the time where the characters were not explaining every bit of everything. Yeah. But you cut into the middle of a conversation and could in infer what had happened in the scene that we didn't get.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like when the next we see the dad on the phone and he's talking to his mom. He's like, hey, you know, just so you know, mom, like Kiki's leaving tonight.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I guess that, you know, to like tell people to come and see her off. And uh Kiki's mom's making her wear the black dress that's traditional. She doesn't like it, she doesn't think it's pretty. But the mom says, like, that's not what's important for a witch. It's important to have a good heart. Follow your heart and keep smiling. Kiki insists on taking the radio.
SPEAKER_03She's like, Dad said I could take the radio. And he's like, Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, see what happened is that she she asked dad and she's like, Mom said I could take it. Oh, that was it. Like, right, okay. Well, because originally she it was her dad's radio. Yeah. She's like, Oh, he doesn't, you know, he doesn't mind.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01He doesn't mind if I borrow it. But then yeah, mom's like, I'm taking it. And he's like, All right. So yeah, this is when, you know, yeah, she wants to be lifted one more time. And I was like, oh, can he like takes a second? And I was like, this is so darn cute. And he's like, you know, you can always come home. And she goes, Ew, no way, come back a failure.
SPEAKER_03And I was like, whoa, okay, geez, kicky, no pressure. She's just internalizing this at 13.
SPEAKER_01Yes. But also, like, they both laugh at all, like, ha ha ha ha ha. Like, you know, like it's it's no big deal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, when like this this young girl is like leaving possibly forever, yeah, apparently from her house, and like, I don't know. But it I guess it's nice to have that door open, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Knowing that the door is open, even if the only thing stopping you from going back is your own like stubbornness or you know, pride or whatever. It's nice to know that the door is open, whether or not, you know, however you feel about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I think so. So it's nighttime and like lots of people have gathered to see Kiki off, which again, like, this is a normal thing, you know. Everyone knew it was gonna be a good one. Young witch leaves the town, and like Kiki says that she wants to find a city by an ocean, or like a city or a town by an ocean, like specifically, she wants to be near the water. And I think one of the young girls is like, watch out for boys. And I was like, Okay, or I was like, Are boys the bad guy in this movie? Right now we don't have an antagonist. So I was like, what's going on? I mean, it it it it gives some precedent, like it foreshadows. It's like, watch out for boys, I will. Well, she does. Don't worry. Um, so Kiki comes out with uh her own broom that she made, and her mom's like, Well, I why don't you take the one that I have? Like, it's it's it's better. Um, I've had it for longer or whatever. And Gigi wants to take mom's one. And then I think the older woman was like, Well, you can make a new one when you get there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so I really thought there was gonna be more payoff for this in the end of her making another one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But we'll we'll get to that eventually because I I was worried that like the mom's one like wasn't she wasn't gonna do as well, but like she would do better on one that she made herself. And so you know, like she would fly better on, but yeah, it didn't really happen. So she ends up taking her mom's.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she uh has some tr like she is not a smooth flyer, she has some trouble leaving, like crashes into a bunch of trees, just ping pongs off of it, and then like goes down, and then like they don't see her, and they're just like, Welp.
SPEAKER_01They see her disappear over the horizon, they're like, Well, yeah, I'll see you later. Yeah, there she's off. It's so funny. And so she says they're going south to see the ocean. She wants to hear the radio while they're flying, yeah. She's just like, Hey, Gigi, like you turn it on because my hands are busy, and he does. I was like, oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02She's a very safe driver, she's 10 and 2 the whole way. Yes. Have the passenger stretch the radio for me.
SPEAKER_01That is a passenger balance. I was like, there's no way an actual cat could do this for real.
SPEAKER_02He's magic, it's fine.
SPEAKER_01He is magic, yeah, because it took me a long time to figure out that he wasn't talking to everyone.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. So I I did there's a lot of like lore about Gigi specifically, because I think like there's there is mention of basically like whether or not like other people can hear hear the cat talking, but also like whether or not the cat is actually talking. And no. Yeah, yeah. But then like I yeah, we when we get to the end, um actually no, yes, I'll I'll save, I'll save those notes to the end, actually.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I definitely want to talk about it more about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'll talk about just okay, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm okay. That's very interesting. I hadn't thought about it that way. Yeah, but yeah, for a while I was just like, oh, there's a talking cat. And then like when no one else was responding to him, I was like, wait a second.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Can he not talk to anyone at all? No, just a little magic thing. Oh, someone mentioned that like I think in the beginning you see, I don't know if you actually see her, but um uh Kiki's mom has a cat and you don't hear her talking or anything.
SPEAKER_01Oh okay.
SPEAKER_02So it's just like this is a cat.
SPEAKER_01So then during this, like, I don't remember the music, but this cute little like flying music scene, we get the opening credits in the title.
SPEAKER_02I love the music in this. I love the credit sequences with music stuff happening. I love those.
SPEAKER_01This explains a lot more where I was like, this music feels like Mediterranean.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, Yeah, yeah, it does have that bag. You're right.
SPEAKER_01It really did. And like, like at one point, she flies by this city with like a bunch of smokestacks, and that's where I was like, this kind of reminds me of Tokyo.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because they're like they're they're currently smokestacks outside of Tokyo and like lots of that stuff, but it makes more sense now that it's like 1950s imaginary AU where there was no bar, like that's that also makes sense.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, just unnamed European area, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, Genovia, Aldovia, yeah um what are the other ones? I can't think of any other Hallmark movies right now. Uh so at some point Kiki runs into another witch who like immediately is like kind of snobby. So bitchy. Yeah, immediately not on, like the vibes are off. I was like, oh, is this our bad guy? Okay, let's see. Um, so like she doesn't like the radio, she wants to fly in like silence. And uh this girl's been doing it longer, so she's like, Yeah, a lot can go wrong, you know. Luckily, I have a great skill of fortune telling. Uh, and this is when you find out like everyone should be working on a skill, like have an idea of what you're gonna be doing. Yeah, and then this is when Kiki is like, Well, I don't know what I'm doing yet. So then the girl, you know, kind of brags and like flies off to her city, and then Gigi voices everyone saying that girl and her cat were a snob. And I was like, Thank you, Gigi. Like, that's what I yeah, yeah. Because Kiki didn't seem to notice that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, Gigi's there for real talk.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like the Gigi's the audience, basically, it seems like a lot of the time. So even though it was supposed to be a clear night, we automatically get lightning. And I'm like, oh, this is not what was supposed to happen.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01So they land in a train that was parked with like a little opening door in hay. And I was like trying to figure out what kind of train car that was parked would just have hay, but I was like, all right, let's figure this out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So Kiki is unbothered and is like, all right, cool, we'll stay here. And like, I don't know how long she intends to stay in there. I didn't think it was all night. Um, but she's like, cool, and like undresses in the hay and goes to sleep. And I was like, that cannot feel good.
SPEAKER_02No, it like that's no, it looks it looks so fluffy, like in a cartoon, it looks very cozy.
SPEAKER_01She literally like picks it up like a blanket and puts it on her.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like, well, good night. Yes, yeah. Also, every time Gigi sleeps, he curls in this little ball, and it's so cute. He's just like this little black circle. It's so tiny. He's just this little tiny black circle, it's adorable.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's so little.
SPEAKER_02I know.
SPEAKER_01Presumably, yeah, okay, the train's gonna be there, and then she'll wake up eventually and they leave. Uh, one train passes by Kiki's train, and then Kiki's train starts going. So we're heading somewhere, and then we cut to daytime. Train is still going, and so what this car was was like the top of its hay in a net to feed cows, uh-huh. And the cows are just like facing up and eating it. And so like Kiki falls like halfway through, and they like start licking her foot. Yeah, and then she's like, Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, I'm in your breakfast. And somehow they have gotten to the ocean. And I'm like, I well, I really thought like this train was gonna take her somewhere she didn't want to go.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you thought it wasn't gonna work out for Yes, I did.
SPEAKER_01I was like waiting for the um the oh no conflict. Yes. Yes. I was waiting for the conflict of like we didn't make it to the right city or so I have to make the best of it because I didn't want to be here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Yeah. Or like we have to turn around and find our way because like it's very obvious. She doesn't know where she is or where she's going or the city names or anything. She's just flying south.
SPEAKER_02Just fully vibes-based, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But they ended up in a very large, beautiful city by the ocean. Yeah. And then she's like, Cool, wonder if they have a witch. You know, seems like it should be for me. Yeah. So Kiki and Gigi debate if there are witches there or not while they fly around. She flies to the clock tower, and there's a dude in it working on the clock tower. And she's like, Hey, are there witches here? And he's like, Oh my gosh, no, we haven't seen one in a while. And she's like, Yay. And then, like, everyone is in awe of her. Yeah. You know, but not scared. Like, wow, look at this thing that I might have heard of at one point.
SPEAKER_02It's yeah, it's very like they coexist, but it's still a novelty.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like they're around, but I haven't seen them in my city before. I don't know how to describe that. So it's all going well until like. She tries to play it so cool. She really does. Until like vehicles, which are basically one of Kiki's worst nightmares throughout this entire fly through a tunnel and almost gets taken out by a bus. So many, yes, like so many vehicles. And then and then goes back around and almost hits so many people.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh like the same people that were just in awe of her two seconds ago for flying by.
SPEAKER_02The illusion is shattered.
SPEAKER_01It really is. And then like she tries to talk to some people, and then they like, then they get kind of weird. They're like, oh, that's nice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, tries to introduce herself and note that.
SPEAKER_01Just to like random and like ask random people, can I live in your city? And it's like we don't have the authority to say that places to be, I'm sorry. But also, like, I can't make that decision for you, young lady. Like, I don't know this city. Yeah. Um, so so then our actual real first conflict is our policeman who shows up to write her a ticket for almost causing an accident. You know, luckily, there's a thief, and then the policeman has to run off and says, Don't go anywhere, and she immediately goes somewhere. I think she says, Are you gonna tell my parents? And he's like, Yes, and she's like, Oh no. Oh no, don't tell me. Say one, don't do that. Yeah, I just got here, don't send me back home. Yeah, exactly. So then uh we get a boy on a bike who approaches her and he's like, Hey, that was me. I called off the cops and yelled, Thief, wasn't I awesome? And like immediately Kiki's like, Nope, this is you are nope, get away. They said to watch out for boys, and you are a boy. They did, uh, but he's also very forward, he's a lot, he is, and and so she gets mad at him because she's like, You didn't even ask me your name. Why are you talking to me? Whatever, whatever. And he's like, Oh, well, you're old-fashioned, you sound like my grandma, but doesn't take no for an answer. Yeah, I'm like, and also he doesn't like doesn't stop and say, I'm so sorry, what is your name? Yeah, never asks for her name. No, eventually he finds out, but not for a long time. Yeah, no, but it's just like, I'm in awe of you because you're a witch and I'm gonna talk to you and bother you, and I'm like, bitch.
SPEAKER_02And asks about her broom and stuff, and she's yeah, annoyed by him.
SPEAKER_01She's like, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So then she goes quickly to a hotel, finds out she can't stay there without parents or an ID. Um, but at least she gives up. But at some point, she's just like, never mind. I didn't know. Yeah. Keep looking around for a place to stay. They avoid a police car. Gigi wants to find a better town that's friendlier and nicer. And then um they go by a bakery or they're they're walking to a bakery, uh, and um the shop, the the bakery owner um runs out because uh um a mother forgot her pacifier for her baby, and she's like, Oh man, like I need to go give it to this woman. But the bakery owner is pregnant, and it's like this is gonna take a little while. But I mean, she's like, this baby will be up, like, so I gotta go do it. And so Kiki's like, well, I can go take this thing to this mother, like that's fine. And the woman is astonished, and so uh, you know, Kiki returns it very quickly. The the mom is very happy.
SPEAKER_02So Kiki very dramatically is like, sure, I'll deliver it, and then hops on her broom and then just hops off this little stone ledge, and this woman's like, What?
SPEAKER_01What's happening? But like, but in like the best way possible of just like huh, like surprised but happy about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like delightedly, not just like, oh my god, what's happening?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. It's not like uh oh, yeah, I feel like a lot of the time surprised in movies is a bad thing. Yeah, this is like pleasantly surprised, I guess, like whim whimsically surprised. I don't know if that's a thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I it it's literally just like the they know that there is magic in the world, and they're just like, huh, look at that. It's it's the magic in the world. Just I saw the magic today. Yeah, it's like we're gonna be chill about it. It's like I saw a rainbow. Oh, cool.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it occurs naturally. Um, so Kiki returns to the bakery, and I wasn't sure why, but then the woman was like, Oh, I hold on, like I want to talk to you. Um, so Kiki has a message from the baby's mother. In the message, Kiki is called the new delivery girl. And so the woman's like, Hey, do you want to talk? Like, let's go upstairs. This is where we live, and offers her hot chocolate. And this is when I was like, Is she pregnant? Because I was like, maybe this is just you know how she is shaped. Like, yeah, which you know, um, but uh we find out soon she is. Um, and so the woman's like, I like you and I know what you are, and like, you know, you're pretty cool, and then like immediately offers Kiki her spare room. Her name is Osono, and my note is like, I love this, like I love how like this is she's just like this is awesome. Like everything's coming up, Kiki. And but I liked it. It was like low, like, I mean, there are technically high stakes because this is a 13-year-old girl trying to find her way in the world, but it's like, you know, she she does, like she finds a nice woman and they, you know, they're figuring it out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like it's not a movie where you're like, oh, someone offered you something nice. It's like, oh, what, but what are they trying to get out of you? It's just like oh, this is just a nice person doing a nice thing. Yes, and it's I had that thought of other things.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's but yes, I did, I was mostly trusting of most characters. Yeah, it was yes, it was nice to not think of ulterior motives for a lot of the characters. Yeah, I'm being honest, mostly the boys. I was like, I don't trust you. Fair. I don't know what you're up to. Honestly, legit. So um, let's see, the woman admits, you know, I'm I'm gonna have a baby soon. Like, if you can hang out around the bakery, help out, do delivery, you know, all that jazz, like we can work this out. Kiki's excited because she can see the ocean from her room. Um, Gigi's like, hey, what about that new town? When are we gonna leave? Yeah, and Kiki's like, nah, I think we're gonna we're gonna stay and we're gonna meet more nice people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like the people, like the person I met today. And I was like, that's cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, he also sees the the neighbor's white cat and it's like, wow, she's rude to every cat is being mean to Gigi.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. Gigi only sees the rude people, and Kiki sees the nice people. Yeah. So the next day a shiphorn wakes up Kiki, and I feel like it takes her a second to kind of like realize where she is. Yeah. But then um, I realize she has to go outside to use the bathroom, and I was like, oh, awful. Like she goes down in like a nightgown. And so when she sees uh the husband come outside, she like hides in the back so he can't see her. Because this guy like doesn't really talk at all. No, he has like two lines, I think. Yeah, the strong silent baker type, of course.
SPEAKER_02Um, his his name is Fukuo.
SPEAKER_01What? He has a name? Okay. Yeah. Interesting. Let's see. So um we got Kiki in her room. She's like counting her money and like wants to has decided this is my business and wants to get a phone. Uh so she goes in to help the bakery. She says, Hey, I I want to do a delivery service. And Osono's like, great, I'll be your first account. You can use my phone. If you help out here, you can use my phone, you can have the room, and I'll throw in breakfast. And I was like, Oh my god, this is so cute. I know. And then um, what was his name again? The baker? Oh, Fukuo. Fukuo seems to like, I don't know, like kind of make friends with Gigi a little bit. He likes shows off a little bit, and he likes smiles at Gigi, and I was like, What's happening with these? And it like makes eye contact. And I was like, What's happening? It's very cute, which is really funny. Then we get this little quick montage of Kiki like working on her room, working in the bakery. Kiki is still not great around cars, even walking, because Gigi is like, look, you're busy here, stop that.
SPEAKER_03And then she says, We're still alive, aren't we? Which I the lost affair. Crazy take of like Kiki. I mean, I mean, hey, but did you die?
SPEAKER_02I'm like, I mean, every time everything is still coming up, Kiki, though, to be fair. At this point, sure. Yeah, she hasn't learned anything yet.
SPEAKER_01No, no. Let's see. She walks past some girls and hates her dress more. They go shopping, and Gigi points out a mug with him on it, and she buys it, which is so freaking cute.
SPEAKER_02I I saved that picture ages ago, like just the meme of that. It's like, look, it's me.
SPEAKER_03It's me. I love it.
SPEAKER_01Well, I love it. It's like not even like if you weren't looking, you wouldn't notice, but it's like she puts that down when she checks out. I'm like, she bought the mug.
SPEAKER_02And then you see you see it like throughout the rest of the movie.
SPEAKER_03I'm just like, it's the mug. It's got it's got DJ on it. It's so it's so cute.
SPEAKER_01So she's walking around after buying stuff. She sees these really pretty red shoes. And then there's like seven boys riding around in a car. I'm like, not safe. And then Tombow, the boy from before, is one of them, was like, hey, and then like points out to his friends that she's a witch, and she like storms off. I'm like, good for her. Like, don't be telling everyone her business. Like, you still call her Miss Witch. You don't know her name. Yeah, you're like labeling her for six other guys that are with you riding joy riding in this car. Like, this is suspicious on every level.
SPEAKER_02Bad first impression, bad second impression, buddy. You're not earning any points, buddy. No, Tombo, get it together.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Well, this is where I was like, I guess any other rated movie, these boys would be real trouble. Yeah. Like seven guys riding around in a car? Absolutely not. Yeah. Stay the hell away from them. I know. Leave her alone. Yes. I was like, so it was really hard for my brain to get out of that one. To turn off the danger sense. I don't, yeah, the danger sense for these guys. And it looked like a lot of them were older than her, too. And I was like, I don't like this at all. No. So we avoid him again. So she gets back to the bakery and Kiki has her first delivery customer. It's a birthday gift for a woman's nephew. It's a stuffed cat toy that looks like Gigi. Uh Kiki didn't think of a price, right? So the woman's like, here you go. And Kiki gratefully accepts it. We guess it's a lot of money. I don't know. It is so real.
SPEAKER_02Like, true. It's everything, like especially like I full disclosure, like right now, I am like very burnt out at my job. And I am a lot of a lot of uh Kiki's journey through this movie is very relatable to me. Of hey, well, flying's the only thing I'm good at, so I'm gonna make that my job. And then, oh man, I hadn't thought about how much to charge for this service yet. Like the amount of times that I've talked to my friends who who especially are like artists or do crafts or anything, and it's like, oh, how much do you want for this? Like, uh I don't know, like what uh uh it's sure. And so like we're all just like telling each other to charge more for stuff constantly. It's like like I just I I bought I bought something from someone, like I had I had bought stickers from some from like an artist, and I had just like sent them like money on Venmo to s to mail them to me. And I was like, Do you want me to throw in some money for like shipping? And they went, Oh, yeah, I guess so. And I was like, Oh bro, what do you mean? But I was like, this is relatable. This is all of my friends going, oh, yeah, I guess, sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, for sure. I was this was another instance where when she didn't have a price range, I was like, Oh my god, is the woman gonna shortchange her? No, the woman's very nice and offers what seems to be a great amount of money. And I'm like, God damn it, yeah, it's this movie.
SPEAKER_02It's it's truly the best case scenario of so many things where it's just like, I don't know how much to charge you. Here's a lot of money. Oh, right? Okay, yeah, oh, okay, great. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh so Kiki's got her first job, she uh is flying off, and then like as she's flying off, Tombow's like peddling around and then like sees her and like asks a Sono about her, and I'm like, you're a creep. Yeah, no way. You no, I know don't ask other people about this girl that you still refuse to ask her name. Yeah, that's none of your business, Tombo. It is it, yes. Uh okay. So this is where I make the note of the Mediterranean feeling music when she's flying around. Um, so I was like, okay, this it felt so weird to type that, and I was like, but but now it makes sense. I was like, this is wrong. Why is this? This is anime.
SPEAKER_00What do you mean?
SPEAKER_01Yes. I was really working against my own instincts here. So let's see. So Kiki flies high because she doesn't want to get caught by the cops again. Kiki got her first job. Let's go. Yes. Um, but then she does this like insane dead drop down while flying, and then goes off, and I'm like, what is happening? Yeah. Um so my next note is I hope the service goes well. I don't really want any huge conflict in this movie. Womp womp.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_01She fights birds now. But I mean, I like we'll we'll get it in the summary, but like, you know, I was just like, this is just like going so fun and well. I was like, this is fun. Like I like this. And like any any point where I had seen conflict before, like potential conflict before, there wasn't any. Yeah. So I think I was lulled into, well, maybe there won't be any right now, then too, because we're still going. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So so she's like flying with geese. I think terrifying because geese are awful, but she's happy with it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, I think that they're flying, like they can't attack you, like they're busy, you know. This is the ravens did. Well, I mean, like geese, though, like that like geese don't have talons, they just have beaks and they can't like fly. I don't know. I feel like they can bite, they can bite in the air, can they not? I don't know. I feel like honestly, flying with a formation of beast, not physically bite in the air. I feel like they move their beaks. I don't I mean they can clearly, because they can hunk. I feel like flying being in the air with a formation of wild geese is the safest place to be with wild geese. I mean, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01In this instance, sure. Yeah, because they're honking a lot, and Gigi's like, they're upset, and Kiki's like, huh? And Gigi's like, they're talking about a gust of wind coming, then they're gonna fly higher. Yeah. Number one, I'm like, Gigi understands other animals, but Kiki can't. And that's when I was like, wait a second, there's there's something special about Kiki and Gigi. What's his deal? Yeah. Kind of, because I was like, he he's speaking English, or like he's speaking to her. But yeah. So just what the geese said would happen happened. The gust catches them, and the geese go up, and Kiki loses the present in the woods, drops to catch it, and then lands right next to a bird's nest, a crow's nest. Uh-huh. So the crow immediately attacks her because they think she's going to, you know, steal the eggs, uh, and then follows her pretty far out of the woods, and then finally leaves her alone. Um, Gigi's like, your fault for not listening to the geese, and Kiki's like, whatever, we made it, we're fine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, but then Gigi notices that the toy fell out, and so they have to turn around, but then all of the growth like descend from the trees. And so Kiki tries to get through, and then they like start attacking and pulling at the broom. So that doesn't work. So they retreat, and then Gigi brings up old, not lore, but like crows used to serve witches and do what they said. Kiki was like, Look at you now. Yeah. So then they want to go during nightfall to get the toy when the crows are asleep, but they both agree that like that's that's too late. Like, that's not enough time, or it's too much time. And so Kiki's like, okay, I've got a plan. I'm gonna deliver you as the toy until I find the real one. And I was like, that was not where I thought this was going. Oh no. I did not think decoy gigi was gonna be in this story. Yeah. So uh so Kiki goes to the house to deliver it. This little boy rushes up knowing that he's going to get a present from his aunt. He shakes it, calls it dumb, and then laughs and runs away. And I was like, oh no. It's like, well bye, well bye, Gigi. This kid's gonna be a menace. Um luckily he wasn't, but I was worried about that, you know, like the little kid with the toy, like just I don't know, I feel like it's a trope where they just like break shit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a bad first impression. It feels like I like a horrible kid from a Pixar movie, you know?
SPEAKER_01I agree. He feels pretty bad. Yeah, doesn't end up being so, but I'm like, you're gonna be a nightmare child, and I'm gonna be worried.
SPEAKER_02He's like a little bit of a monster, but he's not like he's he's not as like destructive as he could be.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he's not like abusive, yeah. You know, to to animals or toys. So overall.
SPEAKER_02Like if he thought it was a stuffed cat, it's like, okay, yeah, like sure. That it makes a lot more sense. For real.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Um, so the mother does uh take note that Kiki's late.
SPEAKER_00Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01And I was like, I did not think, I thought it was just supposed to be like before nightfall. I didn't think she was late. So I don't know. I was like, that was a weird jab. Yes, first job. Um, but smartly, Kiki does get a signature, and I was like, ooh, good for you for thinking of that. I would not have thought of that.
SPEAKER_02Receip. There you go.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Oh, yeah, yeah. Let's see. So Ket is the boy's name. And so he comes down with Gigi in hand and wants to put a canary they seem to have in the cage that Gigi came in, which the mom says, fine.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so then Kiki's like, oh my god, okay, I gotta go buy a video.
SPEAKER_03I gotta figure this out. Hang on.
SPEAKER_01I gotta go help Gigi. So then Kat is trying to get their canary into the new cage. I don't know. Then apparently they also have a really big dog that is waking up and smelling cat. And I was like, oh no, more problems for Gigi.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So come back to Kiki. She is running into the woods to try and find the toy. In all caps, I said, how? Like, how are you? How are you gonna know in the woods where you dropped this tiny ass little toy? How are you gonna- She's like, it should be over here.
SPEAKER_02How are you gonna find a black cat toy in the middle of the night?
SPEAKER_01How are you gonna know where it was in the woods from the ground versus where I don't know? But she's like, it should be here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Don't worry though, because she finds a log cabin and sees the toy in the window.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I was like, okay, well, this can't be great. There's gonna be problems here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So Kiki knocks, it's like an open, messy house of a painter. Um, the woman's on the roof. Though the there is a woman there, she's on the roof. Um, Kiki gets up on the roof, and there's so many crows, and Kiki's like, oh no.
SPEAKER_04I'm endangered.
SPEAKER_01So Kiki asks about the toy. The woman's a little cagey, honestly, I would say. Um, like you know, like why did you drop it in the first place? But then in between scenes is when Kiki has explained, is it Ursula? Is this Ursula?
SPEAKER_02Yes, this is Ursula.
SPEAKER_01To Ursula what has transpired and then Then Ursula has a change of heart, like, oh, I, you know, now I know.
SPEAKER_02It's kind of like, oh, well, why didn't you say so?
SPEAKER_01Like she's like, she did, but I'm like, Yeah, it's it's of course, you know, I will give this to you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So uh Kiki gets the toy, but the head's falling off, and it's like, the damn birds. Um so Ursula Brooks had a deal with Kiki, like, yeah, clean my floors and I'll sew the head back on. I feel like that was kind of weird. I was like, lady, you could have just done that, and she didn't have to clean your floors. That was a weird transaction of service.
SPEAKER_02I love the scene transition of like, hey, let's let's make a deal. Then it comes to Kiki scrubbing the floors, and it's like, ooh, smart. Oh no.
SPEAKER_01I was like, this is brutal, lady. Like, she's she's 13. Give her the toy, help her out. So we cut back to the house. Ket is watching TV, um, but apparently his birthday guests are coming, so he has to go. Very relatable, where the mother is saying it nicely, nicely, and then gets loud. And I was like, every mom's been there. Yeah. Every kid has been distracted by a TV, and you're like, hey, Earth's a child. Are you even taking this in? Yeah. Like, is this coming through to you at all?
SPEAKER_02You're in space, buddy.
SPEAKER_01Come on. Oh my gosh. So Ket leaves Gigi in the room, and the dog, I we got the Jeff. Jeff the dog. I'm like, what an awful name for a dog. It's hilarious. I love it. Poor Jeff. Jeff makes like eye contact with Gigi as toy. And so Jeff licks Gigi and then curls around him to sleep, which still I'm like, I'm very suspicious of like Scud from Toy Story. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Or um, you know, the cat from Cinderella, like like bad animal vibes. Yeah. It's like, I don't know about you before I knew his name was Jeff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. As soon as you find out his name's Jeff, it's like Jeff's alright.
SPEAKER_01Well, because I also it I didn't even realize who they were talking about for a second. Because, you know, the toy's done, Kiki's flying off to go get Gigi back. And then like the family's talking, oh, Jeff loves the toy. I'm like, who the fuck is Jeff? Jeff's the dog. The cat's the kid and Jeff's the dog. All right, weird ass family. But the family thinks it's hilarious that Jeff just won't leave the toy alone.
SPEAKER_02I wonder if it's because it's an English name. Like, like a more English.
SPEAKER_01I'm sure it's it's a weird translation of something.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah. Or like that's why it's an animal's name and not a not a human name.
SPEAKER_01So in Japan, they name their gogs Jeff. I'll have to ask someone.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that would be great. I honestly, I love an animal with a human name.
SPEAKER_01It depends.
SPEAKER_02I really do. It just makes me laugh so hard.
SPEAKER_01I yeah, I I feel like it really depends on the animal and the name. Like it has to vibe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But then you can you could pretend that they're roommate and talk about, yeah, yeah, I gotta get back to Jeff at home.
SPEAKER_02One of my friends, uh, she had a a neighbor with a dog named Daryl. What? Yeah, and then she would just hear like Daryl the dog. Yeah, just like hearing outside. It's like Daryl, Daryl, go potty. Go. It's like Daryl hurry up. She's a 40-year-old man. Exactly, yeah. Well, no, what am I no, one of my friends? I just remembered she had a dog named Paula and she said she got lost one time. And so she's just like walking through her neighborhood yelling for Paula, and it's just like, who are you looking at? It's like five dollars.
SPEAKER_01I know. Sounds like your grandma or your aunt. Exactly, yeah. Oh no. Yeah, Paula's gone missing. I put her on a milk carton.
SPEAKER_02Oh Paula. What does she look like? Well, she is two feet tall. What what do you mean?
SPEAKER_01All right. All right. So, Jeff.
SPEAKER_02Jeff the dog.
SPEAKER_01Jeff walks off with Gigi in his mouth.
SPEAKER_00Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Jeff wants to go outside with Gigi. At this point, we don't know what's going on. And I'm like, oh no. So Jeff is let out with Gigi. Yeah. But then like Kiki somehow is like right outside the door, knows. And then so then Gigi like runs to Kiki and it was like, hey, Jeff's a good dog. You know, Jeff like took care of me and helped me get outside and all this stuff. And I was like, oh my god, this is so wholesome. Like this, yeah, yeah. I wish I could have, I would have wanted to hear Jeff's voice. That's the one thing I would have wanted to like hear a little conversation. I was like, why didn't we hear from Jeff? I know. Because he was so sweet and nice. They just like, you know, broed out together for a while and took care of Gigi and then, you know, let him go home. And I was like, this is like not a normal scenario for an animal stuck in a child's house with a big pet.
SPEAKER_02It's so chill and wholesome. So cool.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you know, you know, Jeff just sounds like this. Like he's got I know, but it would have been fun to do. I know it would have been really funny. Especially with Gigi's like nasally voice. Yeah, exactly. It's just like so, so yeah, Kiki and Gigi, you know, fly back to their home over the city. They're all tired.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they trade, they trade Jeff with the uh the stuffed ones like, hey, can you can you take this inside?
SPEAKER_01And he just can, yeah. Mosey's back inside closes the door. He'll take it back inside. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I love that Gigi says he's a good dog. And I was like, that's it. That's so cute. I loved that. He's a good dog. I'm like, oh, I love this.
SPEAKER_01Oh. So Kiki tells Gigi about the painter, Ursula. She's like, oh, you know, Ursula wants to draw me. And then Gigi's like, naked?
SPEAKER_03I'm like, Gigi, where did that come from? Like, what is this? I'm wondering if that was like one of the ad libs that's like. The lines. Oh my god. I'm deeply curious now. I want to see. That makes sense. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It does seem like a like a riffing sort of like, ah, maybe.
SPEAKER_01That's funny. So we are coming back to the bakery. There is a super cute bread wreath for Kiki's business in the window. That forgot the I keep I wrote the baker, so I don't have his. Oh no, it's okay.
SPEAKER_02Oh god, I wrote it down like Fukuo? Yeah, Fukuo. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Good job. Fukuo. Okay. Fukuo is like pacing and seems to be waiting for Kiki, but like doing that dude thing of like playing it cool. Yeah. When Kiki comes in, she sees the sign. She's so excited. She hugs him because he made the bread sign for her.
SPEAKER_03So cute.
SPEAKER_01Let's see. Uh another day in the city, presumably the next day. We're not really sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, it's a slow day at the bakery. Kiki's at the desk. She's like super bored. She's worried about not getting enough customers. And then she's like, and then we won't be able to eat anything but pancakes because that's all they can afford. The phone finally rings and it's a delivery for Kiki. Uh, so she's excited. And then Tombow comes into the store dressed nicer than normal. Uh, Kiki snubs him and he's like, Hey, I want to buy something. Uh, and then he's like, Hey, we're having a party at a club, the aviation club. Uh-huh. And I was like, Oh my God, like a club? No, it's like a like a, you know, we're interested in flying. Like a school club, kind of, yeah. Right. But like when he first said a club, I was like, oh my God, what are these boys into? Yeah, exactly. I was just like, what is the vibe here? Right. And so we so he gives her like a real invitation. And then a man comes in with a really heavy package looking for a delivery. Uh Tombow, you know, says, I'll be here at six to pick you up, and then like kind of leaves, and then um Kiki has two deliveries now. Yeah. So she she rushes upstairs to Osono and was like, Oh my god, I was invited to a party and I have nothing to wear. What am I gonna wear? But like, I also didn't think she was gonna go to the party.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So confusing. Um, but Osono's like, oh, it's great, you know, it makes you cute and mysterious. And I was like, All right, that sure. Yeah. You know, also like I know you don't have anything for her, so it's not like we can, but like, I guess I guess pump her up, I'm not sure. But then Osono's like, hey, how are your deliveries? And he's like, Oh my god, I forgot. So I booked. I am so busy.
SPEAKER_02My planner is my day is stacked.
SPEAKER_01But at this point, like my note is this is nice and low stakes, I like it. Like, it's like what's you know, honestly, at this point, the worst that could happen right now. Oh my god, my delivery is like a boy invited me to a thing and I have nothing to wear. Like, okay, this is this is still fine.
SPEAKER_02And the thing is, like, even until like the very end, when it is like maybe, you know, a life or death thing, like at the very, very end, everything is still relatively low stakes. It's like, oh, that's it's like it's like, oh, that's a bummer, but like no one, it's fine, everyone's okay. Like, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You're like, okay, maybe you you couldn't have delivered a thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like it's a little bit of like, oh no, what are we gonna do?
SPEAKER_01But it's like it's fine, like it's you know yes, but it's not, oh my gosh, this is awful and life-ending.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So Kiki takes it again, like the heavy package. I was like, oh my gosh, she's gonna have trouble. Nope, she gets it there. Yeah, you know, she's like kicking off of roost to get it there, like parkouring on her broom, but she gets the package there. This is when Gigi is the audience and was like, Why do you want to go to this party? I thought she didn't like him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Also fair. I didn't understand that either. Yeah, she doesn't really answer. Yeah, I don't, yeah, she doesn't say anything, does she? I didn't think she, yeah, I was like, I don't think there was a response to that. Yeah. So then Kiki's next appointment is this big, beautiful house. Um, and an older woman answers the door, but like immediately notices the broom. It's like she eyes the broom and then lets her in and then brings her to another older woman in the house who apparently is the homeowner. Um, so Kiki's supposed to be delivering a treat, and the woman says it's not ready yet because my oven's not working, and it's a herring and pumpkin pot pie. And I said, What? What? Yeah. That sounds awful.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh the older, not the older, uh, the the the housekeeper. I'm not sure what we're gonna quantify her as. Her name is Barza, yeah, is playing with the broom in the front of the room. She's bonkers. Why?
SPEAKER_02She's bonkers, and I love her. I love her. So, okay, so I just so the other the older woman does not have a name. She is just listed as Madam. Um Madam. Yes. Um, she is voiced by Debbie Reynolds in I Know Her. Yeah. Um, yeah, she's voiced by Debbie Reynolds. Uh, and then um Barca is voiced by Edie McClerg. Um has sounds familiar. So you would know her face. Have you ever seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Yes. She is the receptionist at the school with the red hair and the round face. Oh my gosh. Yeah, that's her.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, those are that's those two. And they're they're hilarious. I love them.
SPEAKER_01That's so funny. Oh, she's done voice acting too.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01So interesting. Yeah, I like that they have like Wait, she was in Frozen.
SPEAKER_02Who was she in Frozen?
SPEAKER_01A woman named Gerda. I imagine one of the women in the town. Yeah. She was in Wreck It Ralph. She's done a lot. She was in Cars 2. Okay. Oh my god, she was in Hannah, Montana and the Ember's new school TV show. Okay, okay. She's done a lot. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I was like, I don't know if I know her, and then as soon as I saw her face, I'm like, oh girl, I know you. Yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_01I feel like this is always like, I don't know, like a tenth of the episode is usually me looking up people and what they look like and saying, but I mean I used to do this on Game of Thrones too. Oh, yeah. And but it was like always a bigger reveal because I had seen the person for like 10 episodes and then you would finally say what they were in. I'm like, oh my god.
SPEAKER_03But it's always like, you know what they're from, right? It's like, no, obviously I don't. You have to tell me. They look entirely different. A lot of them do. You're not wrong.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's wild. But yeah, it's it's a lot of me like you can hear me typing, and then I'm like, oh. So yeah, I think I think this is just who I am in this this version of a podcast. This is what I am.
SPEAKER_02You know, hey, it I like that I like the genuine reactions though, too. Like, especially if I'm like, I don't I don't know how to explain this, and then hearing you go, oh, and I'm like, oh thank goodness you know it.
SPEAKER_01Yes. But I feel like it's not I shouldn't do it before. Like, I feel like it is better if I because I I assume a lot of the time that you'll have information about them. So it's like, well, I don't want to like cut into what you're gonna tell me with what I looked up before, even if it's after I've seen the movie, I'm like, I don't know, I'll just go with it.
SPEAKER_02I I mean same here. I like I like being able to it's like Yeah, to just hear it. Yeah, and like organically learn some new stuff while we're recording.
SPEAKER_01Agreed.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but yeah, Barsa is is bonkers and I love her.
SPEAKER_01Barsa's amazing. She's she's wrapped so so yeah, so the pie's not done. So Madam is like, well, like I guess you gotta go. Like it's not it's not ready.
SPEAKER_02She offers to pay her anyways, though.
SPEAKER_01She's like, Well, yeah, yeah, because she's like, come get the broom, you know. Uh here's your money.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then Kiki's like, well, I have some time, like very confidently, like, I have time. Let me help you with the pie. Yeah. What about this other wood burning oven that you have? And then Kiki and Barza were like, Yeah, let's like, this is adorable.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So, um, so Gigi is like, Well, what about your party? And Kiki's like, Well, I want to do the right thing. Like, you know, I want to like she's trying to pay me, like, no way.
SPEAKER_02Like, I can't just take her money.
SPEAKER_01No, yeah, which, you know, I think she would have been in her right to do. Yeah. But she's a nice uh little lady.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, trying to make a good impression.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes, especially if this woman has a lot of money. Yeah. So she gets the pie in the oven. She offers to help around the house while they wait, too. Then they get some tea and they're talking about the party. And then Madame was like, Oh no, like my clock's 10 minutes late. So you're gonna be late for your party. So then all three of them like rush to get Kiki out of there in time. They get the pie out, they put it in a basket. You know, Kiki gets paid, they leave, and there's a storm coming. Kiki's trying to avoid the rain. Poor thing has to cover the pie with her dress because she says the food will get cold if they stop. Um, we see Tombow uh looking very dressed up uh at the bakery for Kiki. The clock tower rings six as Kiki just gets to deliver the pie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh, so she is late. Um, but then like the fancy girl opens the door and with disdain talks to Kiki, who apparently doesn't like the pies her grandma sends her. Yeah. She's like hella rude.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Complaining to everyone else at this party.
SPEAKER_01I was happy she still signed and took the pie though. Yeah. I was real worried she was gonna be like, get the shit out of my face. I'm not signing for this. I'm not gonna so again, like rude, but also low stakes, like not a real bitch, just kind of a mean granddaughter, because then Gigi is the audience almost like I can't believe they're related.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, does the little like hissing tongue out thing?
SPEAKER_01Yes, very cute. Yes. So uh Kiki flies back in the rain, sadly, and Gigi's like, well, maybe, maybe you still have time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like they see him leaving, I think. It's like yeah, he's checking his watch, he's walking away. Like just turn in the corner when they get there.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. So Kiki runs into Osono and she's like, Oh, he was just here, but then Kiki's like, Well, I don't have any clothes to wear, they're all wet.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So she hangs her clothes up and then just like wants to go to sleep and not talk to Gigi. Yeah. So he's like trying to help her feel back. So then the next morning, Osono is checking on her, and Gigi's like frantically trying to get out of the room.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because Kiki is sick. She has a fever and her head hurts, and Osono uh says she'll bring her some medicine and some oatmeal with honey.
SPEAKER_03She's she asks, Do you think I'm gonna die, Osono? And Osono just laughs at her. And I was like, I'm not sure. It's it is the very dramatic, like 13-year-old, like, I'm sick and the world is ending. I had a bad day and now I'm sick and the world's ending.
SPEAKER_01I think on top of that though, like, I feel like she's not with her mom. And her mom being a witch. I'm like, how many times have you actually gotten sick if your mom makes potions and stuff? And your mom's like here with the potion.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah. So it's like, you know, this woman's here, but like, this woman's not a mother yet either. Um, so like, yeah, am I gonna be okay with this, you know, not necessarily stranger, but woman that's not my mom to take care of me when I do not feel good. Um, but yeah, it is it adorable because, you know, she's fine, like you're gonna be fine. It's all okay. The drama of it.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, oh honey.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes. And just and and you know, I didn't get to do the thing that I wanted to that night and and all the stuff. Um, and then Osono tells him, Oh, well, that boy came by to check on you, and Kiki's like, oh my god, no. And Osono's like, Don't worry. I told him to go away. Like, he's not coming in while you're sick or whatever. Like, it's okay. So uh Kiki's up the next day making breakfast, she's feeling so much better. Um, she calls to Gigi, but then he sees the snobby cat next door. Uh Osono tells Kiki she has a new delivery for Kapori and to deliver it in person. Yep. Kiki calls for Gigi, uh, but he's still with the new cat. Her name is Lily. And then Kiki's like, oh, don't worry, like, you know, you hang out. Yeah. Like that's okay.
SPEAKER_02I do, I do like when Osono gives her the next delivery. Osono like pays her and Kiki tries to turn her down. And she says, impossible, work is work. And I'm like, good, this is a great message.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah. Cause well, I thought she was doing it because like she took care of her the day before or something like that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it was that of like, oh, like I'll you know, not a problem, I'll do this as a thank you.
SPEAKER_01Right. Good work ethic, but also like instilling good work habits of running your own business because they are both business women. So I like that, yeah, she's not taking advantage of this young lady.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think that's like that's like the best, like the most like the part that feels the best about watching this. Like, at no point is anyone like, oh, well, can you just do this for free for me? Like, everyone is like, Yes, I will pay you for what you are doing for me. I might ask you to do a hard thing, but thank you for doing it. Here is money, and I'm like, this is great, this is actually really good. I feel good about this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. No, no one's trying to trick anyone. Yes, it's crazy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she's getting paid what she's worth, and that's great. You love to see it.
SPEAKER_01Yes. So I was surprised Kiki's walking for her delivery. Yeah, I didn't understand because I was like, well, is it because she doesn't have Gigi with her, or or maybe it was close enough? I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it doesn't seem like it was super far.
SPEAKER_01I think she ends up further away, but yes, yeah, later. Um, so the delivery is right by the ocean. Uh Tombo sees her and he's like, Hey, what are you doing here? And she's like, I'm here for delivery for this name. And he's like, That's me. And then Kiki's like, God damn it, so no.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. Just God damn it.
SPEAKER_01She's like, Why would you do this to me? You got me. So Kiki apologizes for not being available. And he said, You were sick, like, that's totally fine, makes sense. He tells her about uh what the party was about, which was basically putting a plane propeller onto a bike. Uh huh. Um, and he says, you know, did you hear about the dirigible that landed on the beach? And she's like, What are you talking about? Because he is so he really just he's interested in flying. Yeah, like he wants to be in the sky. So they take. His weird ass bike. Uh-huh. Um, and I said he seems nicer, but still has not asked her name at this point. Uh he does, I think later that day, because he calls her Kiki later.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I think at this point he knows. I feel like Osono probably told him.
SPEAKER_01Sure, that makes sense. Yeah. I think so's maybe an off camera. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I still I still think he should have, I don't know. Tombow, yeah. Tombow owes her an apology.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02That's yeah, that's where I'm at.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I agree. Although she, I mean, she's a 13-year-old girl, but I was like, you did a real quick 180 once you were invited to a party girlfriend. I'm like, I'm not sure where you're where your mind is right now. You know, like he didn't do anything besides that to endear himself to her. Yeah. So I feel like if there was something where like he was actually, after those first two bad instances, if there was like a nice one in between and then the invitation to the party. Yeah. I feel like building that not good guy side, but like the the good side of him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like I making a better impression than those first two. Yes. Yeah. No, I I agree. Yeah. I think I think something in between those first two and then the invitation. Like, because even the invitation was just like, oh, you know, um, hey, I want to buy this. It's very forward. Yeah, it was like as an excuse, and like, hey, I'll be here to pick you up at six, and I'm like, that's a bad vibe. I don't like that. Yes. But like, what if you and then I I thought she was gonna blow him up.
SPEAKER_01I didn't think she was gonna want to go. It's like, okay, this boy keeps following me, like, we should do something about it, not like, oh my god, a party, I want to go. I'm like, kiki. I know I but you are 13. Yes, that's true.
SPEAKER_02I think it is also like her, like specifically trying to meet other nice people and like making an effort. And I think I think in that case, like getting the invitation, like that, then like accepting the invitation. I think that is her, you know, assuming assuming positive intent, I guess, and like try like keep trying to meet people halfway, which I think is like trying to see the best in the people. Yeah, and like when she decided, like, I don't want to find another town, I want to stay here and meet more people who accept me. Like, Tombo has already, like, you know, he's a lot, but he's already he accepted her so fast. It's just like you're a witch, I think that's cool. Do you want to hang out? And she's like, not really, and he's like, Are you sure? And she's like, Well, maybe, I don't know. So give me a couple days.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like give give it a third time's a charm. Let's go, maybe. I guess.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So so they take his weird bike, um, and she has to really help him drive it, like motorcycle style, throw in their body weight to clear corners and steer.
SPEAKER_03It's going so slowly at first that that guy just is laughing at him going the other way. I'm like, I love that he's getting bullied. I like this. He should be. Yeah, it's a weird bike. Tombo needs to get bullied more. People need to be meaner to me. Tombo better. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, don't worry, because uh cars are real the real enemy in this uh movie. Because oh my god, another large car comes by. Vehicles are the antagonists of Kiki's delivery service. That's fair, which is crazy because she technically drives a vehicle. I know, which um non-magical vehicles. Yes, so after the first almost hit, they like bounce and then they're like, oh my gosh, we're like flying a little bit. And then a bigger car comes and they go off the road. Off a cliff, down the railway. Over the railing, yeah, off the road, luckily into grass. And like, you know, at some point while they're falling, the propeller flies off. So like they're not even slow falling anymore, they are just falling. But then keep going down the hill on the bike and then crash in the grass. So, like crazy a dramatic wipeout, yeah. Yes, and I mean, like, I know it's a cartoon, but like crazy, they're okay. Yeah. Like, by all accounts, it doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense. So then Kiki starts laughing, because you know, what a crazy thing to happen. They both say how scared they were. But then yeah, then they both start laughing. Tombow runs to go get his propeller because oh my god, that you know, my whole life's been leading up to this propeller. I can't listen, hang on. Yes, but Kiki stays by the bike. Yeah. Uh they look at the dirigible, which is on the beach. Let's see, they talk, and Kiki, like you said earlier, says it feels different. She feels different about flying, so she started doing it for a living. Yeah. Because she's been doing it since she was a baby, but didn't have to think about it then.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And Tombo's so in like he's he thinks it's so like impressive that she's just always been able to do this and she takes it for granted. Yeah. Yeah. That that is, I wrote that line down and I was like, oh no, this is hitting too close to home. It's like this used to be fun before I started doing it for a living, and like, woof. Same girl.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Most people feel that way when they do that. So uh Kiki tells Tomo that she's decided he's a nice person, and he's like, What? You're just figuring that out now? She's like, I thought you were a clown at first. And I was like, same girl. Um, but then he makes her laugh. And then a car comes up with a guy and three girls. Girls and gang. Yeah. I get, but it's like girls this time. It's not, it's like the older boy that's like always driving, and then like three girls this time. Yeah. Oh, it's the starish girls. You're right. It is, it is one of the, I don't know, is it the same three girls that she saw walking before? Yeah. Okay. I didn't remember. Like, I didn't remember that it was the same girl each time. Um, but yes, it's the party girl. Not like party party, but like the girls from the party. Um so they want to go tour the thing. And like Kiki immediately gets kind of sour, doesn't want to go. And we hear the birthday girl say, Oh my gosh, like she's working. She just delivered something to my house for my party. Kiki gets mad and walks off. Why? Because I'm also confused.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think I think it's that she was enjoying I I really think it's just like the very human, like, I was having a nice interaction, and I was having I got I had this attention and I felt this connection to this person. And then Tombo's like, hey, my other friends are here. Do you all want to hang out? And she shuts down because oh, I thought I I I thought we were hanging out.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's what I kind of thought. Yeah, but like it's a lot of this is never explained because you don't get the internal thought.
SPEAKER_02I think I think what she says a little like in the next scene when she gets back home, I think that's exactly what it is. Like she she Oh, okay, okay. Yeah, she leaves and and walks home and then Yeah, she brushes him off and then yeah, has to walk home.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and all the way.
SPEAKER_02And then this scene of her getting like it's I love this movie for how much time it takes with some things. Like there are scenes where it's like you're just watching someone do something, you're like watching someone walk, you're watching the city, you're watching her fly, you're why like and even in this one, it's like you're watching her like get home and walk upstairs and like drink a glass of water. And it's like, I like I love movies like this that like I just take the time to let things happen. They don't feel rushed. It's just like I don't know. I like the pacing of that. It's it's I I don't know, and I and I feel like a lot of a lot of like Miyazaki movies like do capture a little bit of that, like taking a breath and like things don't always have to be happening. It's like this scene can just like breathe a little bit and just happen. But like this scene of her like getting home exhausted, I'm like, this is such a mood, and I understand all of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she like turns on the radio, turns it immediately back off, like this is not the vibe that I want. And then flops on her bed.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, just face down onto the bed. Yeah, I've used that gift so many times. Have you really? That's so funny.
SPEAKER_01That's a good I'll have to look that one up. Yeah, just cold laps. Um Gigi comes in and meows, uh-huh. And I was like, that's not right. So Kiki keeps talking to him about feeling like an outsider, and then he blows her off for his new friend. Yeah. He like leaves. Yeah. So I'm like, what what what's this about?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's it's it's shitty. Yeah, but I think I think like this, like that, like I think something's wrong with me. Like I I'll I'll feel like close to people, and then suddenly I'll start to feel like an outsider again. And I think I think that's what what happened when she was on the beach with Tombow, because it's just immediately like, oh, like I had I had my in with this group, and then it's like, oh, I'm not part of this group though. Like, I'm not part of the larger thing. And it was also the girl who was like not super nice, like not mean to her, but like she saw her be mean, and it's like I wouldn't want to hang out with her either. So yeah, I think I think that's like mostly what it is, like finding okay, like the sense of belonging and trying to fit in, but also like like she got so immediately welcomed in by a sono that any interaction that's not that easy seems like a little bit more daunting, like right off the bat. It's like, well, this like I it can be this easy, and when it's not, it's like, oh, this feels bad. Yeah, but yeah. Gigi's just kind of a jerk and then leaves to go hang out with his new girlfriend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but like this is where not that he stopped talking, but like she's not understanding him. And so I guess we'll get into it more once we keep talking, but like I'm confused. So then Kiki is watching the bakery, she's eating dinner by herself, but made dinner for Gigi. And then he like comes in and she's like, You can't be like, you know, late to dinner all the time. And then like he meows at her and she's like meow, like she makes fun of it, or she gets mad at first, and then she's like, wait a second, why are you meowing? Basically, like I can't understand you, and then immediately tries to fly and can't, and says she's losing her witch's powers. And I said, What? with three question marks.
SPEAKER_02And I says, Yeah, no. And I wrote, and that's burnout, baby.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but like, no, yeah, we haven't even been here this long. I know. Oh god. I know. So so then it's nighttime, and she's like trying to very stealthily figure out how to fly again. She doesn't get very far, and then she breaks her broom. Yeah. And then I'm feeling really sad. Kiki tells us Sona that she has to take a break from deliveries, but we'll work in the bakery. Um, they all see uh the dirigible in the sky outside, and Tombow is on it and like fucking waves.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then he calls Kiki later and was like, Did you see me? Yeah, I waved at you. And she's like, I don't want to talk to you anymore. I think she's talking to herself when she says, you know, I'm still in training, uh, but if I lose my magic, I will have lost everything. Or was that was that talking to Osona?
SPEAKER_02I think that was talking to Osona because that was like right after she got off the phone and Osono asked her, like, what's right, when he was wrong.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. So it's like, like this, this is everything. Like, this was why I left home in the first place. Like, and then like suddenly it's going away.
SPEAKER_02I think this was the whole point.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And like, I don't even know if she realized this was possible to happen. Because, like, you know, up until this point, as a viewer, we didn't know it was possible. So she's uh working on making a new broom in her room. Uh then Ursula, I guess the next day, shows up looking for Kiki and it was like, Hey, how's business? And Kiki's like, not great. Yeah. So then Ursula's like, hey, you know, take a break and come to my house and we'll hang out. Um, and then the pain uh Ursula's like, hey, Gigi, you want to come? And he's like, Nope. So they're like, All right, well, fun. So they they take a bus, enjoy the outdoors, and then try to hitch a ride. And I was like, what are we doing? It was the 80s. Yeah, but don't worry, an old man in a truck stops, yeah, drives them, but then tells Ursula that he thought she was a boy. So, whoops, they finally arrive at the cabin and Kiki apologizes to the crows.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Because uh Ursula is very close with them, and she's like, I I did not mean to do anything. Kiki goes inside and sees this like very intricate, pretty painting of like crows and a pegasus and an ox and a moon. Yeah, and I what I described to be like a cat girl.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um kind of like angular face a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I thought like the ears are like they were like ears or like whiskers that were like kind of, I don't know, it was like it was it felt very cat-like. I'm not sure why.
SPEAKER_02So the story with this painting. So this painting. Ooh. So so this painting specifically is called The Ship Flying Over the Rainbow. Um and it's a real painting. Um, it is it was done. I couldn't I found conflicting things whether it was by a teacher or by students from a uh Japanese special education junior high. Um, and at some point, like basically they just saw it and decided to use like the existing painting for the movie. Um the only thing that they added to it was the face that ends up yeah, the girl's face that ends up being Kiki's face. Um, but yeah, yeah, it's just a an actual painting.
SPEAKER_01That's so pretty. I mean, it looked, it looked real, and I was like, this is like very different than the rest of the animation or the background paintings or anything like that.
SPEAKER_02I think it's it's actually listed in the credits. It's just the only reason that I saw it was like I had looked up like the name of the painting itself. But it's like they're credited in the the closing credits too.
SPEAKER_01Wow. Yeah. That's awesome. That's really cool. So Ursula tells Kiki um that she was inspired by her, and that's Kiki in the painting. And so uh Ursula says, you know, like I want, I I wanted to draw you, I would like you to be a model, you know, says you're very pretty. Um and so Ursula goes on to talk about uh that painting and magical powers sound very much the same. Like, you know, some days I have basically painter's block. You used to fly without trying, but now that you're trying, you can't. Uh so try to not think about flying, and your problems will go away and it'll be fine. And I was like, eh.
SPEAKER_03I was like, okay.
SPEAKER_01And Ursula was like, yeah. And I was like, oh, don't tell her that. That seems real simplistic.
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Well, luckily she keeps going. Yes because I was like, are we leaving it here? Because then Ursula says, you know, at one point she had basically writer painter's block. Um, and she found the answer because she had to find her own style because she said what she was painting before was like bad versions of other stuff. Yeah. Um, so trusting your spirit, finding your own inspiration uh are the keys, but sometimes not easy. And so Kiki realizes she's never thought about why and got caught up in the training and you know, wonders if she's going to find it or if it'll be worth it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But, you know, seems to have like a path and some hope now that she originally didn't have because nobody else could relate to her like Ursula does with their specific art forms.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it's it really is like just the hearing someone else say, Yeah, I've had this happen too. Like I understand what you're going through. And I think that that's something that like Kiki didn't know that she needed to hear, but also like she's, you know, never been presented with that before.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. And and you know, the way that it seems like culture-wise, there's only one witch per town, so like it's not like you can talk to another one and be like, hey, have you ever had witches blocked?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she can't really compare notes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, and like not even her mom. Because presumably, like, didn't tell her about this or or prepare her for this possibility, or even maybe new. Like, this, this is or just learn.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was the very vague, like, oh, it might be hard, but it's like, what do you mean by that? Like, that's so big. Yeah, it wasn't like anything like tangible of like, hey, you should be careful about X and Y and Z. It was just like, I don't know, let us know.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. It's it's yeah, it's not this could happen. It's just like have a good heart. And you're like, cool, just keep smiling. It's like mom, prepare me for yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the mom was just keep smiling, and dad was if you if you bail, uh, you can come home. And I'm like, that's not that's not it.
SPEAKER_01Neither of those are realistically, dad has better advice, he does, you know, like don't tell little girls to smile.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, 100%. Yeah, but it's also like if it's hard, just quit. It's like, no, that's not the take either. I guess.
SPEAKER_01I mean, he at least gave her the safe space to do that. Whereas the mom was like, you can do it, just smile.
SPEAKER_02And you're like, I feel like no, this is this is like the difference between like a parental figure versus like a cool ant figure. Like Ursula has cool, oh yeah. Ursula has cool ant energy where it's just like, hey man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, although I was like, how much older are you than Kiki? Like, I don't, you know, I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Like she seems she seems like it's so hard to tell, especially with anime things, but I feel like she could be like maybe early 20s or something.
SPEAKER_01Like, not that's what I was I was older, like 1920s-ish. Yeah, yeah. Cause yeah, the way that she was like, I guess the way that she was drawn and like taught, I was like, you're not that much older, but you're older enough to have this experience.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, still a very like young, free spirit of like, hey, I live in the woods and draw crows, and it's like, all right, bro.
SPEAKER_01Honestly, love that for you. Let's go. Sure. Yeah. Was it on the radio that we hear about? The spirit of freedom repaired and ready for flying. Oh. Or the TV.
SPEAKER_02I think it was the oh god, I can't remember.
SPEAKER_01It's okay.
SPEAKER_02I think it was the radio, yeah, because it was before Kiki got on the radio.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's right, because Kiki's on her way back. That's right. Okay, yeah. Cause so she she calls the bakery, tells Asono she's coming back. Um, Asono tells her, Oh, you know, that uh the the madam, the older woman, is really insistent on you doing another delivery. So Kiki's like, okay, I'll do it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So she gets to the house and it's a box, and she tells Kiki to open it. And it's a cake for Kiki to thank her with her on it, and it's adorable.
SPEAKER_02And she says she wants to find out when her birthday is so she can bake her another one.
SPEAKER_01I know. It's so cute. And then like Kiki gets a little emotional, but then like, you know, like straightens up and like, you know, thank you so much. And like, I would love to know when your birthday is as well. And I'm like, oh, how much like how weirdly mature.
SPEAKER_02I I love it. It's so cute.
SPEAKER_01It's very sweet. So so now we've got the dirigible on TV. It's like having you know lots of trouble because of wind, and Barza is thrilled.
SPEAKER_03She's I I love that they said she's the adventuresome type that she's really into the aviation. And now she's watching the car crash of this of this dirigible takeoff.
SPEAKER_01Well, at one point when the TV she's like, oh, just when it was getting good, and I was like, people could die.
SPEAKER_03No, what like at the very first fight, she goes, Oh, how terrible. And I was like, oh no. But smiling. Oh no. I was gonna say, I'm thinking um uh Bill Hader's character. Bill Hader. Oh no, I'm horrified. That's terrible.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's Barca. So so they talk about a midsummer wind picking up and blowing uh blowing literally like blowing the blimp like up. Yeah. So it's like vertical, basically. I don't know how blimps work, but that seems wild. So there's like, I don't know, 20 or more sailors trying to hold on to this thing. But of course, Tombow's like at the bottom of the pile and is the only one left holding onto the rope that's attached to a police car and is blown away. Yeah. So Kiki understandably freaks out and leaves. The the blimp is just like going over town very slowly with Tombow on it. But I didn't realize they were, of course, they would be people like captains and stuff, but I was like, oh good, there's other people at least on like the ship.
SPEAKER_02I don't think I realized that either at first, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Why would you? Um Because the captain's like, we're gonna lower the helium to like make it go lower or whatever, so they can like land or something. Tombow slips down onto the car, car falls conveniently off into a pool. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02The middle of a pool where no one is.
SPEAKER_01Middle of a pool. Yeah, we're all good. Let's see. Kiki runs into a man with a broom and tries to ask nicely, but literally takes it from him and flies off.
SPEAKER_02She does this like great, like it's the Miyazaki thing of like her hair like fluttering and everything. And then she just has this like energy blast of like getting off the ground. It's so good. I love it.
SPEAKER_01It was cool. So yeah, so like the movie goes like silent as it's like, you know, can she fly? Can she do this? She concentrates and kicks off.
SPEAKER_02Because she has inspiration, because she's gotta save her friend.
SPEAKER_01She has inspiration, but it's not like a witch's broom, so she's struggling a bit more, it seems like, than she would.
SPEAKER_02I wrote later, but I think it's true the whole time. I said this broom is a menace.
SPEAKER_01It is, absolutely. This is not a good broom.
SPEAKER_02This broom is spicy and it needs to calm down. Yes, it needs to read the room.
SPEAKER_01Yes. So uh the blimp is like heading straight for the clock tower. And like for a second, the crew wants Tombow to jump onto the clock tower. Clock tower guy is there again conveniently. Maybe he lives there, maybe he's quasimoto. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02It's nice to have a stable job, honestly. Good for him.
SPEAKER_01You know, and a place to live, clearly. Room and board included. So he tries to catch Tombow, but then like the blimp crashes into the tower and then starts to fall because it's losing helium, and then snags horizontally onto a building across the street. Yeah. Like all in quick succession. Yeah. And like Tombow's still on the rope, somehow, of course. Um, because like, let's be real, wasn't worried about him dying. Like, didn't think that was gonna happen. I think we're good.
SPEAKER_02That is the nice thing in a G-rated movie. That's not that movie. Tombow's gonna be okay.
SPEAKER_01Tombow's fine. Yeah. So Kiki's like flying by, like, every everyone that she knows has sees her on TV to get that cute little, like, everyone that she has met, like, sees her going.
SPEAKER_02Like every interaction she's had in this city.
SPEAKER_01Yes, exactly. So she struggles to get him, the like the crowd's chanting behind her. Tombow falls, it goes silent again, and she rushes and catches him. Suddenly, everyone has confetti somehow that they just throw in the air as they lower them onto a trampoline. Broom guy's like telling everyone that it was his broom. Our old ladies celebrate, Osono's so happy, and then goes into labor. And then Gigi finds Kiki, but still meows. Okay, so real quick. Is this where we're gonna talk about this?
SPEAKER_02Real quick. So apparently in the 1998 dub of it, I believe, Gigi talks again at the end. But what? Yeah, so so I think, and I I read that like one place. So basically, the intention is one that Gigi like only ever talks to Kiki, but the point specifically is that uh Miyazaki made Gigi unable to talk to Kiki even after she regained her powers to show that Kiki has grown up and doesn't need her quote unquote other self anymore. So basically, the whole it's it's kind of like Gigi was like her conscience, sort of the entire time. So at this point, it's like I have found this inspiration, I have found like that external purpose that Gigi was serving. She is basically internalizing that, and so he doesn't need to talk necessarily. And so now that's and so now it's just like that's like he he kind of served that purpose. So that was okay. So that was the intention of that.
SPEAKER_01That feels better than what I thought.
SPEAKER_02I think so too. And I think I think that's the thing, like it's not as clear, but also it seems like the in an instance where it's like maybe he just didn't have anything to save right then, and then the mini epilogue of the credits is like its own separate thing. But I do I I do kind of like the coming of age sort of closure, like self-fulfillment aspect of it.
SPEAKER_01I like that better. Yeah, um, I feel like it could have been explained more because I like it's it's it's set up very clear as like every witch has a black cat. Yeah. You know, we've only met two other ones, her mom and that rude little girl. Yeah. Um, but she also had a cat that was black. And so I was like, okay, the cat just ends up not talking to them eventually, but just hangs around. I don't know. Okay. I mean that that feels better because I was like, are we still in limbo here? Like it didn't feel like it didn't feel like complete closure because I was still worried.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and also like as like she was able to fly again, but she was not able to fly really well. And it was I thought that was the broom. I blame the broom a hundred percent. Yeah, it was the it was the weird push broom that that did not need to be floated. It's it's the it's the Evan Kelp push broom. Like it doesn't, it doesn't need to be in the air, it's not happening. But like yeah, but I I I think it's I think you're right, like it is kind of like a lack of resolution because it was like, yeah, she could fly, but like not, you know, like she she had that power back, but it's also like you know, not flawless, like she did still have difficulty, and then Gigi is back and and not with his girlfriend, but also is not talking. So it's like, ah, what's happening? But then I think I was like, is this a one-time thing? Or like, yeah, I don't know. Yeah, but I think also like the little I read um with the end credits, like the intention is to have like uh Miyazaki specifically said, like, I want the end credits to like leave you, you know, have you like leave the theater with a good feeling and like have some resolution. And so I think like specifically what happens in the end credits, I like the little epic epilogue of offering.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, we'll we'll we'll talk about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but but I mean like as far as like seeking resolution, it's like okay, here's the resolution that I thought I was gonna get by now.
SPEAKER_01But but I was still like, well, that doesn't show that they're talking to each other, but but yes, with the on the on the the the broom and everything, yeah. Um so uh what's crazy is that at some point during this, Prime was like, Hey, you're done here. And I was like, I kind of want to watch the credits. I could have entirely missed all this shit if I had been like, okay, I guess the movie's over. Yeah, so like it tried to like stop me from getting all of the okay, okay. I'm like, is it just Prime that they hate everything? No, I think it's I don't know.
SPEAKER_02It's it's wild. I think like Disney does that with like Marvel movies, and I'm like, what do you mean?
SPEAKER_01Sometimes they have buttons that just say skip to credit scene.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it does. I forgot about that. It's been a minute since I left.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I think they're they're hip to the jive, I think finally. That's true. So we get like end credit scenes, no audio, like over music. So you're just seeing scenes happening that happened afterwards. And so we see Tombow has finished his flying machine, is peddling with friends on bikes, the crazy guy in the car, and Kiki flying with them.
SPEAKER_02She's part of the gang.
SPEAKER_01She is, and then they have their own thing and they fly over the ocean because they can both fly.
SPEAKER_02And Kiki has a little cord, so if he starts dipping, she can pull him a little higher.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes, because she can actually help him. Um, let's see. Uh Osono and Fukumo. Fukuo, yeah. Fukuo. Uh Osono and Fukuo have had their baby. Gigi and Lily have babies now. Um, there's multiple little baby cats. Oh, okay. Here in all caps, will she ever talk to Gigi again? Question mark. I'm so worried, apparently. Um, because it because there it's like, well, he's he's moved on. Yeah. Like, did he move out? What's up? I am literally so confused in my ass. But then, you know, Kiki continues to deliver on her broom with baby with Gigi and baby Gigi. So I'm like, Okay.
SPEAKER_03Little tiny black cat, it's so cute.
SPEAKER_01Um yes. Uh Kiki sees a little girl dressed up as her. So cute. Tombow makes a real sign for Kiki and her delivery service outside of her room. Uh friends wave to Kiki. She looks out at the ocean. Kiki's parents finally get a letter from her. Yeah, I'm like, how many, how many, uh, how long does this take for her to write? No idea.
SPEAKER_02Literally, it was like, as soon as you get there, let me know. I'm like, girl. Right? And she did not.
SPEAKER_01Um, so so it does, it does cut back in for them to read the letter. Yeah. She like doesn't mention like basically what happened, and she's like, Me and Gigi are fine. Like, we're all good. And I was like, That's where I was like, I guess I have to assume that this is the happy ending because like she said she and Gigi are fine, so I guess they're fine. And like, yeah, maybe this is a thing that like Kiki knew was gonna happen eventually. Yeah, or I don't know. So yeah, I I was ending a little worried, but like leaning towards positive, yeah, but a little bit. Yeah, I was like, I think this is the happy ending that we're getting. Like, I'm a little confused, but overall, like good. Yeah, things seem good, so yeah, and that's that's where it ends. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, that's the movie. I have like 10 pages of notes, and I don't know why, because this movie does not feel like it deserves 10 pages of notes.
SPEAKER_02I I have I think four, maybe. How many?
SPEAKER_01That makes sense. Yeah, like yeah, truly not that much happens.
SPEAKER_02And half of it is is trivia. So I don't know. I think I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I think some of it's editorializing. I think I needed to like write down. I put spaces in between scenes also this time.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01It just felt easier because there were so many like cuts and spaces and things. Yeah. I guess I gotta give my reading.
SPEAKER_02What would you think, Emily?
SPEAKER_01I would give it eight out of ten dirigibles.
SPEAKER_02Oh, eight out of ten.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I like it a lot. I really don't have any problems with it. I mean, besides like the little bit of confusion with Gigi. I was but like knowing that the creator has said this, like everything's okay. Yeah, I feel good now. Yeah, it's not like we don't know. Yeah, like I don't have any uh like really no complaints. I really liked it. I think like it's not this movie blew my mind.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, but it's really fun, it's really pretty. Like, you know, I think this would be fun to watch with Evelyn maybe in a couple years. Maybe I can get her to dress up as Kiki. Uh be so cute. So yeah, no, I I liked it a lot. I thought it was really, really cool.
SPEAKER_02I'm so glad. I think I agree. Um, I think I'm gonna give it eight out of ten. Oh god, what was it? Uh fish and pumpkin casseroles. What is it called? Herring and pumpkin pots.
SPEAKER_00Herring and pumpkin pot pie. Pumpkin pot pie. Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Eight out of ten herring and pumpkin pot pies. I don't want those. Well, too bad. Wait, I have eight. Oh, I have eat on my party. No, I don't know what to do.
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah. Grandma, no. Yeah, I I really like this one. Like, it's it's very sweet. I like the pacing of it. I like it's a really nice background movie too. Like, it's a very nice, like the music's really pretty. It's it's got a lot of music, yeah. The music's beautiful, it's low stakes, it's gorgeous to look at. It's not one of my favorite Miyazaki movies, but I'm really I like it a lot, and I'm really glad that I watched it. Yeah, and I think initially, like trying to just I don't know if I mentioned it on here, but like trying to decide which, you know, which of the the Miyazaki movies to have you watch. I love Totoro. I don't think anything happens in Totoro.
SPEAKER_01I was like, I don't know how we'd talk about it. If we ever want like a really short episode, we'll take a break and we'll watch it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, maybe we'll do that. Yeah, but I think it's that's another one where it's just like it's vibes-based. I don't know. Um, but yeah, I think I think this is a a sweet one. That's it's just it's it is really nice to give ourselves a break and watch something where it's just like everyone's gonna survive this, everyone's gonna be okay, it's all gonna work out for the best, and and we don't know a real low stakes kids movie, because the kids movie that we have watched, not really low stakes. Absolutely not. Yeah, this is kind of lock and happens. There's no there's no cartoon peril, there's no, you know, it's it's so chill.
SPEAKER_01So it's like birds, maybe. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And literally the message in that is like, hey, don't bother birds. And it's like, okay, that's a good message.
SPEAKER_01And nobody meant to, like, it was an accident. It wasn't like intentionally trying to bother crows.
SPEAKER_02Um, so as far as how it holds up, I don't I only saw this, I think maybe five years ago. So it's not, it's not one that I like watched a long time ago. When I watched it the first time, I don't think I knew about the setting of it. I don't think I knew that it was based on an an alternate universe, Europe, vaguely. So like I I like I like it more having the context of it, honestly.
SPEAKER_01Me too. I did too. After finding that out, I was like, oh, this all this is like clicking together that didn't before.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it made like especially like being able to see like the reference, like like seeing like the hill with the with the trolleys, and I'm like San Francisco, like yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Like seeing and for me, the clock tower just felt so in in the beaches with the seabells, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like being able to sort of like see those different like like elements of of the scenery. Like it's just it's those extra little bits that if I hadn't done research on it, which I didn't the first time I saw this, um, just I those extra little bits that make it more enjoyable to to just watch. Well, this was this was a fun, lovely stroll through uh a nice departure. Yeah, through a low-stakes movie. Um yeah, if you would like to talk to us about some low-stakes movies that you like or or the the history of anime movies, um, you can you can talk to us and follow us at a bunch of different places. SPEAKER_01And the reposts and the and I I feverishly watch the downloads every week. So um that's always nice for me. Yes, Emily updates me on the downloads.
SPEAKER_03We both get excited about them.
SPEAKER_01Yes, so thank you so much for for listening. Shoot.
SPEAKER_02Well, someday we'll come up with a closing for for this, and it's gonna, man, it's gonna blow your fucking minds. It's gonna be so good. Real talk.
SPEAKER_01It's been a while since we recorded. So, like, we don't we don't even know what we said last time. I'm gonna be honest with you guys.
SPEAKER_02Um if we made a joking, like, oh yeah, this is our sign-off from now on, we don't remember.
SPEAKER_01It's gone. So real. Um maybe next year.
SPEAKER_03Next year.
SPEAKER_01I don't know how long it took us for the last one.
SPEAKER_02Honestly, yeah. Um, yeah, it's been God, it's been like about a year since we recorded the first episode.
SPEAKER_01Oh, shoot, you're right. Uh we gotta end this.
SPEAKER_02Uh time is a flat circle. Um what?
SPEAKER_01And as as I thought that was gonna be your sign-off. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03No. As always, time is a flat circle. No, no, don't wait out. Don't do it. No.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna start the music now.
SPEAKER_03No, don't as I was gonna say as always, but as most of the time, we'll see you at the movies, I guess. We'll see you at the theater, sure.
SPEAKER_01The theater.
SPEAKER_03See you at the movies.
