Yeah. So as our uh uh your first time guesting on the podcast, definitely not the last time. There are plenty of movies that you need both of us to see, I'm sure. Um so we uh we like to get an idea of your taste in movies. So do you have three favorite movies?

I do. Uh it is tough to pick. I lean more into like horror as sort of my genre, horror suspense. Uh so my all-time favorite is gonna be The Exorcist.

Uh there have been so many other, so many other good horror movies recently, though. Uh Hereditary is up there. And uh, let's see. Honestly, this on a lighter note, this movie is probably one of my favorites.

I was wondering if this was gonna make the list. Yeah, because this is it's funny because I think Hereditary came out while we were already together, but the other two, this one and um The Exorcist, I did not see until you and I started dating. Um, because I was a big old scaredy cat and I didn't like horror movies, and then I watched more of them with you. Um, but yeah, so we are we are discussing uh one of your top three favorite movies, um, 1992's Incino Man. Um now, Emily, we talked a little bit about this, but uh, why why didn't you see this movie?

How'd you miss this movie? How'd you miss it? Well, it's easy to miss when you literally don't know it exists. I knew nothing about it, had never heard of it. Nobody has ever talked to me about it. And if it's been referenced in anything, I didn't get it. Because I don't I don't know how widespread you will tell me the fun facts, but like I don't know how widespread this, if it's like more cold clear, like I don't I don't know the expanse of this movie. Yeah. So if there was anything referenced, I did not understand it.

Yeah. So there aren't there aren't as many, like when I was doing research, there aren't as many references like in other media. It just, it seems like something that like it kind of pops up every now and then. It's like, hey, this movie exists, and like kind of vague references, but it's also like a concept that it's like, oh, you know, like a caveman frozen and ice. Like that's just a reference that exists outside of this movie, anyways. Um, but yeah, it was it was all context that like you, you know, didn't have, never having heard have heard of it.

Right. And then and then finding out before we watched it that it was a comedy, because that was also not clear. And yeah, I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know where Encina was. I didn't know it was a place. Um, so that's totally on me. I was like, oh, it's a place, got it. That makes more sense now. Um, but then yeah, seeing seeing our first hour and a half movie was exciting.

Yeah. Shocking, shocking that the Disney Channel original movie couldn't keep it under an hour and a half, and yet here we are.

I did not know I was gonna be a like Pauly Shore fan, like at all. But something about just how chill and funny and stupid this movie was, it just stuck with me. And there were so many good, like memorable kids being kids. Like lines.

But this movie just had so many like fun little bits in it. And just between, I don't know, the nostalgic, like the of the times feel of high school and like the clicks and everything, it just yeah, it it was formative. It was this is, I guess, what high school is gonna be like, except I can't find a caveman.

I did not see this movie until a while into us like dating. Like, I don't I feel like we might have been together for like five years or something. Like, it was a while, and I don't know, I don't know why. Like, I think I've always loved Brendan Fraser, so I I don't think it was anything of like, I don't care about this at all. I think I just did, I think I was like Emily, where I was like, I didn't know anything about it, and so I like didn't understand necessarily. And then it was like, no, you gotta, you gotta watch this. Like, this will explain a lot. And I'm like, okay, these are things that you say. I understand now. But how did it not come up in five years? I have no idea. Oh, go ahead.

So I will say, toward the beginning of our relationship, she was reluctant to watch anything that I recommended.

So I was a s I well, I think I think also it was like I was a snob at first, but also a lot of your favorite movies were horror movies, and I was like, I'm scared. And so I think the focus for a while was like, well, yeah, horror movies, but this one's not that bad. And it's like, but I think you'd really enjoy this one, kind of easing into that. But I definitely understand the the the instinct of, oh, she'll think this is real stupid. Absolutely.

Yeah, I I'm so glad that I've come around to not being that person anymore. Like, I feel like everyone who likes studies film in school goes through that sort of plateau of like, I'm inseparable. I only watch film. And now I'm like, this is film is an art. Exactly. And I'm like, this is a boring person to be. I don't want to be this guy. I would rather just enjoy things. Um, but yeah, and then I watched this and it's it's very stupid, it's very silly. Um, but I we watched it last week together because it was uh it's been a long time since I'd seen it. I know I'm sure it's probably been a little bit since you've seen it too, Mark. Um but I like there were points that made me laugh out loud. I was like, okay, this is funny. Like this is a this this isn't bad. This is this is ridiculous.

Yeah, it's it's purely ridiculous. But yeah, so we are discussing 1992s in C No Man. I have so many fun facts, and I I I love them all. I'm obsessed.

Um, so I feel like most of this episode is gonna be fun facts.

So in Xeno Man, um stars Polly Shore, Sean Aston, and Brendan Fraser. So one thing I noticed is that depending on what summary you read and where you look for information, it is very unclear who the main character of this movie is. It a lot of them, the DVD cover that is how we watched it, because we liked the meeting of it, um, that was signed by Pauly Shore. Um, the goal is to get Sean Aston and Brenda Ranger someday to sign them as well. It would be real cool. But yeah, uh the DVD specifically says Polly Shore stars and da-da-da-da-da-da. No, I know, but watching it, it's like I don't I feel like Sean Aston is the main character. Like we stay at his house the most.

But then also on Prime said Sean Aston.

Exactly. Yeah, but then also Brendan Frazier is like this is a breakout role for him. This is like a big deal. Like he, you know, is the main character in a lot of ways. So it's that was something where, like, writing the order of their names, I was like, I don't a hundred percent know which one I want to do. So yeah, I thought that was super interesting. Um, it also stars Megan Ward, who plays Robin. She has been in a couple other movies, but she hasn't done too much that I was familiar with, um, mostly like acting in like the early 90s. The other two people that I did want to point out in the cast are um Robin Tunney, who plays um Robin's friend. Um, I believe. Yeah, Ella. Um, she was in The Craft in 1996, um, which is a breakout role for her. She was phenomenal. Um, I think her character is hilarious in this. I think she's ridiculous.

Oh yeah. Um, and also the I can't remember his character's name. Um, but this also stars uh Matt Deloise, who is Dom Deloise's son.

Oh, his oh my god, his character's name is Matt. Yeah, his character's name is Matt too. I was like, I thought I messed up my notes. I was like, that can't be right. Oh, no, it's Michael Deloise. I'm wrong. That's why. Um I think I wrote Matt because I was actually paying attention to the character's name. That was exciting. But yeah, um, Dom Deloise's son. And I was like, I have not thought about Dom Deloise in a very long time. Um, but that's kind of delightful. But yeah, uh, the movie was um directed by Les Mayfield. Um, this was his directorial debut. Um, he also directed the miracle on 34th Street in '94 with um Mara Wilson. Um and he also directed Flubber in 1997. Yes. Yeah.

Yeah, I was like, this, this, this reads, like this, this uh is a this makes sense together. George Zaloom is the um co-wrote the screenplay, and he was the producer. Um, he is one of the heads, along with Les Mayfield, of um ZM Productions. Uh, they it's basically a production company. Uh, the two of them launched out of their college dorm room, um, but they specialize in nonfiction programming and family entertainment. Um, it is now a massive independent production company. Um, which I did not know about. Um, and then the story, the original story and the screenplay was also co-written by Sean Sheps, who is um, she has done some acting um in like mostly in the 90s, like she did some child acting. Um, she's done a little bit of writing. Uh, she wrote Son-in-Law, which also stars Polly Shore in uh 1993. Um, she wrote Inceno Woman, which came out in 1997, which was apparently a very, very bad movie that nobody cares for. It was a sequel, and uh I I did not dig too much into it. It was just like it just seems like it was not a good time that it did not need to get made. Um but she also same people? Yes, a lot of the same people. Well, not uh not the same actors, um, but same like writers. Oh, that's right, okay. But she also uh co-wrote the screenplay to Drumline in 2002, which I know I was I was like, what other what other credits pop out? And I was like, that one, that's wacky. Um, so this so this movie was produced by Hollywood Pictures Company. And I had never really paid attention to production companies um before this, but then as I started looking at some of the fun facts, it mentioned things about Disney, and I'm like, well, that doesn't make sense, it's not a Disney movie. But Hollywood Pictures is a subsidiary of Disney. Um it was created in 1989 and it lasted through 2007. It was started by Michael Eisner, who was the CEO of Disney at the time. And I know that name. I know, I'm Michael Eiser, head of the Walt Disney Company. Um, he's introduced it. I it's it's brand recognition. He did a good job. Um, and also by Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is the studio chief. And Jeffrey Katzenberg is where a lot of this information is from. It's fascinating. Um, so Hollywood Pictures was started in 1989 specifically to make movies that had an adult audience that had more mature themes, but and not just under the Disney label. Um, so Jeffrey Katzenberger, who was the studio chief at this time, um, was the chair of the entire Walt Disney Studios from 1984 to 1994. He was generally responsible, like credited a lot with reviving the studio and like bringing back box office sales. Um, he was in charge of the animation department during that like golden age in the late 80s of animation. So, like starting with the great Great Mouse Detective in 1986, and then through Pocahontas in 1996. So, like he was involved in so many of these things that basically made Disney profitable again because like their animated movies were weird and not getting a lot of money. And it was like the 80s, like Disney 80s stuff is like it's kind of known for being like a little experimental and maybe not not well reviewed. Um, but he also launched um Touchstone Pictures, which was around from 1984 to 2016. Did not realize that was a Disney subsidiary either.

Okay, now I'd have to look at what all that was because I remember that.

So Touchstone was like a lot of um like more mature movies, but also a lot of TV shows. Like a lot of like um like I remember seeing the logo after like a lot of um like more adult TV shows. Like it's just kind of spanning everything. Um, apparently, also during this time in 1993, um, Disney acquired Miramax, didn't know they did that. I need to go down. This is the rabbit hole that I fell down, where I was like, I this whole thing is crazy.

What else have they done? Yeah.

Yeah, exactly. What else do you own? Um, but also Jeffrey Katzenberg was one of the people who helped broker the deal with Pixar, which led the way to, you know, CGI movies and Toy Story in 1994. Why? Um, but Jeffrey Katzenberg apparently was a nightmare human. Um, he apparently got very self-important. He credits basically himself for the studio's entire success. Um, he watching the uh the final cut of the Black Cauldron, which came out in 1985, um, he complained about one specific scene. And I don't know if I've ever seen the Black Cauldron, but apparently there is one scene that he was like, that's too scary, you have to cut it out. Um, and the studio did not do that. So he took the film himself and went to edit it, like um like right before it was supposed to go into production, like go, like go to like be released. Um apparently Michael Eisner talked him down and got him to stop it. And he's like, fine, but someone does need to professionally edit this, and it's gonna get released six months later because you need to make sure you do it right. So he was like a nightmare of a human. Um yeah, he apparently was like uh wanted to be president of the company, but at the time that meant skipping over someone, um, like a guy who had been sort of like lined up for that position. So Michael Eisner apparently was like, Well, yeah, you know, if anything ever like, you know, if this guy who's there decides to leave, you know, we'll talk about it. This guy, um, Frank Wells, he um died in a helicopter crash. And instead, but I know, but I I know, I I don't think it's actually that suspicious. It is suspicious timing. But also instead of giving that job to um to Katzenberg, uh, Michael Eisner just took those responsibilities himself and he just kind of absorbed that role. I know, but apparently that's because um specifically he said later that uh Roy Disney, Walt's nephew, I think, uh brother. Uh brother. I thought I thought it was nephew.

Yeah. Um one of the Disneys um didn't like Katzenberg and basically would have fought against him on the board if he was president. So it was literally just like I had to keep the peace and not give this guy the job that I didn't actually want to give him.

Um Yeah, that was uh that was uh Walt's brother was Roy Disney.

Yeah. Um someone, uh gosh, uh there was a Disney board member who said that he had been brought low by, quote, his ego and almost pathological need to be important. Um so after his contract down by Disney. I know. Well, here's the thing. So after he after his contract ended in 1994, Katzenberg left and opened DreamWorks Studios. What? Yeah, so he went straight from running- See you bitches later. Exactly. He went by, I'm gonna start my own production company with Steven Spielberg, and it's gone pretty well. Good job, DreamWorks. Um, he I know he uh he stepped down from uh DreamWorks in 2016. Um, he then founded Wonder Co, which is a venture venture capital firm for digital media projects. He also founded Quibi in 2020.

So that's his fault too. Yeah, he's just trying to keep with the times and making everyone maybe making it everyone else's problem. Um, so that is my that was my rabbit hole specifically about Jeffrey Katzenberg. And the reason that I looked so much into him is because a lot of the fun fact trivias that I found are about Jeffrey Katzenberg and his involvement and making this movie.

This movie specifically. So apparently this script was written and they were kind of iffy on it. Um Katzenberg showed it to the guy who was in charge of Hollywood Records at the time for like just sort of as like a hey, what do you think? And uh this guy was like, I think you should get Polly Shore to star in this specifically. And uh Katzenberg had never heard of Polly Shore, so he showed him his MTV sort of sketch show, which is called Totally Polly. I did not look into any more of that. I was like, I'm good, small doses are fine. Um, but Katzenberg was like, This rules, I gotta get this guy. Um Polly Shore apparently was originally offered the role of Link, but he turned it down because he wanted to be able to talk in his his comedic inflection that is like his his trademark, basically. So he's like, I don't know how cavemans talk. Um I I can't do my own thing. I don't want to do that. Exactly. Um so basically he said that he wanted to be one of the two high schoolers who finds the caveman. Jeffrey Katzenberg said, You're absolutely right. And then they had them rewrite the script so so then he could be one of those characters. Um he ended up improv he improvised most of his lines too. Yeah. I know. Okay. Yeah. So this was just this is also the first of a three-movie deal with Hollywood Studios and Holly Shore. The second movie was Son-in-law, and I think the third one might be Jury Duty. The other two that you mentioned, Mark.

Yeah. Um, so yeah, uh also um Brendan Fraser w was very reluctant about doing this movie. He turned down doing this movie eight times.

Oh my gosh. Because he had What had he done before this?

So he had just filmed a movie called School Ties that came out in the same year. It came out in 1992. And he this trivia specifically says that he envisioned himself as more of a thespian, worrying that this film was going to make him look too goofy. But the filmmakers really wanted him. So after conversations with them about the film's Theme he decided to come on. He took a lot of inspiration from Buster Keaton for his physical comedy performance, which absolutely tracks like the deadpan face with the physical comedy. He apparently wrestled a plant in his audition.

Yeah. But also I I think that this movie absolutely did like set him up. It set him up to be George of the Jungle a couple of years later.

I wanted to know where George of the Jungle was and all of that. Yes.

Yeah. This is both movies came out in '92 in C No Man and School Ties. So I don't know which one was first, um, but I know that they came out in the same year. And then the next thing that he was in was George of the Jungle, where he was the same kind of guy. And it's like, oh no, Hollywood picked one, unfortunately. Um but he has range, he can do both. Um and then my my favorite bit about casting this is Sean Aston. Um, Sean Aston straight up did not want to be in this movie. He didn't want to make this movie. He fought this so much. Um, this I read this trivia and I was cracking up on the couch. I was yelling at Tamar in the other room. Um, so it says he sent this, he was sent the script, read it, and thought it was, quote, the biggest piece of shit he'd ever read in his life. Shortly after, Jeffrey Katzenberg personally called Sean, asking for his commitment to the film. He was offered $150,000 plus $400,000 on the back end. Sean tried to respectfully decline and even asked if they were willing to listen to his own ideas to make the film better. Katzenberg was only concerned with the money the film would make. After a while, they faxed him a revised script, which didn't actually change anything. Um, he was told Brendan Frazier, who would be in it, who Sean was eager to work with, and that Polly Schur would also be in it. Sean had never heard of Polly, and after watching tapes of his MTV footage that Disney had sent him, Sean got even more reluctant. No! The thing that hooked uh Katzenberg is the thing that got Sean Aston to be like, actually, I don't know.

Um only Brendan Fraser was selling the crazy. Exactly.

Yeah, it's like, well, I like this guy. Um, but it says Disney was Disney was relentless in getting Sean to do this film. So they upped his pay to $250,000, gave him complete control creative control of his character, which he didn't actually use, and then promised him a short film to direct with the option to direct two more movies. He was still on the fence, but eventually took the film. Reading over this, the fact that Why did they want him so bad? I don't know. The fact that the two of them did not want, like him and Brendan Fraser were like, I don't know about this movie, and Polly Shore is like, This is for me. It it does inform a lot about the movie, I think. And I think it also it kind of informs how how Smokey really is kind of the main character at the end of the day. Um, because I feel like this was written and tailored for him specifically.

I know. It the the journey of trying to get this movie made is so funny. Um, I have a couple other small things. So this movie is known as California Man. And it is uh when it's directed or when it was released internationally. Um Sino is not a city that anyone knows outside of the US. And sometimes it is.

Yeah. Uh and then the last little bit is that the clip from The Terminator almost didn't make it into the movie. Um, Disney told the writer to take it out of the script five times, and he kept turning in new pages that had it in there. Uh, Jeffrey Katzenberg was on the writer's side, even telling Arnold Schwarzenegger's agent that if Arnold lets him use the clip, he'll personally come and mow his lawn. Jeffrey then called Arnold, and within 30 seconds, they were given the rights to the movie. What is happening? Jeffrey Katzenberg is a nightmare, and I am fascinated by this man. Gets shit done. He gets shit done, but he steps on everyone's toes to get it done.

I'm like, what else were you behind? I know you made happen. Yeah, he besides DreamWorks, obviously.

Yeah, it yeah, it just it's it's wild. Like this guy, I was like, why does this guy's name keep popping up? You're not the writer. I thought he was the director at first, and I'm like, no, you're just an executive with a lot of a lot of opinions. Yeah. Yes. Um, but yeah, and then I the last I think the last thing was that like the I know one of the things that Mark had pointed out about it was that the soundtrack is is consistently really good for this movie. So the soundtrack is amazing. Yeah.

I I I know somewhere in my notes I made a note to myself, like, I should look at this soundtrack later because like all these songs are I I enjoy all these songs. Like that's you know, so yes. Yeah, it's a lot of fun.

Just looking at the lineup of the tracks in the movie is like if you were to try to put all these tracks in a movie today, it would be s would cost so much.

And then I guess it was this was all before anybody cared about censoring and like changing l logos of Coca-Cola cans or little Caesars. So I think it was more open use on on uh you just call and say, Hey, can I use this in a movie? And that was about it.

Um now it's yeah, like all the candy and everything. Yeah, the icy machine and yeah, everything.

Like, I didn't expect this.

Like I feel like that kind of kicks him out of main character running. I feel like that's like Yeah, he's sidekick. Yes, I really think so.
